Rain fell in steady sheets over the streets of Seattle when the phone rang in the high-rise office of billionaire businessman Victor Langford. He had just settled behind his desk, reviewing contracts and emails from a long day of meetings. The number on the caller ID was unfamiliar, but something made him answer.
“Mr. Langford?” a frantic voice called out. “This is Aaliyah Morgan. You need to come quickly. Your son, Adrian, is lying unconscious outside my building. He is not breathing properly.”
Victor froze, his heart skipping a beat. Adrian, his only son, was in college in Boston and had always been careful. The thought of something happening to him filled Victor with panic.
“What happened?” Victor asked, his voice tight with fear.
“I do not know. I was returning home when I found him. He was barely moving. I tried to help, but I am not trained for this. Please come now.” Aaliyah’s voice was urgent but controlled, showing courage in the face of fear.
“I am on my way,” Victor said, ending the call and racing to the elevator. His mind spun with questions. Adrian had always been responsible. How could he have ended up like this?
The drive through the wet streets felt endless. Every red light, every corner, stretched the tension. When Victor finally arrived, he saw a small crowd gathered. In the middle of the sidewalk, Adrian lay motionless, a faint mark forming on his forehead.
Aaliyah knelt beside him, one hand on his shoulder, her face pale with worry. Victor felt relief that someone was there, but his concern was overwhelming.
“What happened?” Victor asked again, dropping to his knees beside his son.
Aaliyah shook her head, her eyes wide. “I saw him arguing with someone. I do not know who it was. Then he collapsed. I tried to help until the ambulance arrived.”
Victor’s chest tightened. Paramedics pushed through the crowd, quickly assessing Adrian, hooking him up to oxygen and monitoring his vitals. Victor followed as they loaded his son into the ambulance. Aaliyah trailed behind, still holding his hand.
At the hospital, the sterile smell and the low hum of machines made Victor feel both helpless and alert. Doctors worked quickly, running tests to stabilize Adrian. Victor learned that his son’s vital signs had been irregular and that there was a trace of an unknown substance in his system.
