The Seat He Chose on Purpose

Five years after our marriage ended, my ex-husband had an entire first-class cabin to choose from.

He chose the seat beside me.

I knew it was intentional the moment Nolan Voss walked down the aisle of our flight to Seattle, glanced at the empty seats around us, and stopped beside mine.

Time had changed very little about him.

At forty-two, Nolan still carried himself like a man accustomed to having doors opened before he reached them. His charcoal suit fit perfectly, his watch probably cost more than most people’s cars, and that familiar confidence still followed him everywhere.

He looked at me.

Then at the seat beside me.

A faint smile appeared.

“Paige Mercer,” he said. “I didn’t expect to find you up here.”

I closed the book in my lap.

“Hello, Nolan.”

His eyes moved over my simple cream blouse, navy trousers, and leather handbag.

“First class?”

There was enough amusement in his voice to make his meaning obvious.

Five years ago, Nolan had believed that losing him meant losing everything.

The penthouse.

The private flights.

The invitations.

The money.

The powerful last name.

Apparently, he still believed I had spent the years since our divorce regretting the life I had supposedly thrown away.

A flight attendant approached.

“Mr. Voss, I believe your assigned seat is two rows ahead.”

Nolan barely looked at her.

“I’ll sit here.”

She hesitated, then nodded.

I turned toward the window.

“There are several empty seats.”

“I noticed.”

“Then why sit beside me?”

He settled comfortably into the leather seat.

“Maybe I wanted to see how you’ve been doing.”

I almost laughed.

“You had five years to wonder.”

His expression tightened.

“You disappeared.”

I looked directly at him.

“No, Nolan. You made sure there was nothing left for me to stay for.”

For the first time, his smile disappeared.

The Message That Ended Our Marriage

There had been a time when I believed Nolan and I would grow old together.

He had built Voss Renewable Industries into one of the largest clean-energy companies in the country, while I had spent years developing technology that helped make several of its most successful systems possible.

We had been partners before we were husband and wife.

At least, I believed we were.

Then Nolan saw one message on my phone.

It had been sent by Dr. Adrian Keene.

Suite 614. Thursday evening. We should discuss the latest results before you tell Nolan.

That was all Nolan needed.

He never asked what “results” meant.

He never asked why I was meeting Adrian.

He never gave me enough time to explain.

He decided Adrian and I were hiding a relationship from him.

The truth was completely different.

Weeks earlier, I had learned I was expecting three babies.

Because of complications from a condition I had dealt with for years, my doctors wanted me monitored very carefully. Adrian was a specialist and an old university friend who had agreed to help me understand every option before I told Nolan.

I had wanted to walk into our home with answers instead of fear.

I never got the chance.

That evening, Nolan confronted me before I could explain.

“How long has this been happening?”

“Nothing is happening. Please listen to me.”

“Then why are you meeting another man in a hotel?”

“Because there is something important I need to tell you.”

But Nolan had already decided what the truth was.

Within days, our marriage collapsed.

He removed me from company projects, restricted access to accounts we had shared, and instructed his attorneys to handle everything from that point forward.

I left New York carrying one suitcase and a secret Nolan never allowed me to explain.

Three secrets, actually.

Five Years Later

The flight continued in uncomfortable silence.

Eventually Nolan ordered a drink and stared at me.

“You never asked for much in the settlement.”

“I didn’t want anything from you.”

“Most people would have.”

“I wasn’t most people.”

He studied my face.

“What did you do after you left?”

I smiled slightly.

“I started over.”

He seemed almost disappointed by the simplicity of my answer.

What Nolan didn’t know was that starting over had become the most important thing I had ever done.

He didn’t know about the small rented apartment outside Seattle.

He didn’t know about the nights I worked from my kitchen table while three bassinets stood only a few feet away.

He didn’t know that Adrian had helped me find investors when almost everyone else was afraid to challenge Voss Renewable Industries.

Most importantly, he didn’t know about Tate, Miles, and Cole.

My sons.

Our sons.

When the plane finally landed at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, I felt as if I could breathe again.

I collected my bag and walked through the terminal.

Unfortunately, Nolan followed.

Outside, several luxury vehicles waited near the curb.

Nolan’s black SUV was already there.

He stood nearby, almost casually, as though he wanted to watch what happened next.

Perhaps he expected me to search for a taxi.

Instead, a black Bentley pulled toward the curb.

Nolan’s expression changed.

The rear door opened.

Three little boys jumped out.

“Mom!”

I barely had enough time to put down my bag.

Tate reached me first and wrapped both arms around my waist.

Miles came immediately behind him.

Cole, always calmer than his brothers, walked quickly toward me and slipped his small hand into mine.

“We missed you,” Tate announced.

“I was gone for one night.”

“That is still a long time,” Miles said seriously.

I laughed and kissed the tops of their heads.

Then I remembered Nolan.

I looked up.

He had not moved.

His face had gone completely still.

All three boys had inherited my green-gray eyes.

But almost everything else belonged unmistakably to their father.
