PART 1 — THE ROOM THEY TOOK WHILE I WAS GIVING BIRTH

My mother moved my thirty-one-year-old brother into my newborn daughter’s nursery while I was in labor. She didn’t ask permission, didn’t tell my husband what she was planning, and apparently believed that by the time we came home from the hospital, we’d be too exhausted to argue.

What she hadn’t counted on was the blue folder our attorney already had with my brother’s name on it.

The first warning came nine hours into labor.

I was lying in a hospital bed outside Columbus, Ohio, gripping my husband’s hand through another contraction, when his phone vibrated.

Daniel glanced at the screen. His expression changed so quickly that I knew something was wrong.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

“It’s Linda, from next door.”

He turned the screen toward me.

There’s a moving truck in your driveway. Your parents are carrying boxes inside. Is everything okay?

For a moment, I wondered whether Linda had confused our house with someone else’s. Then I remembered the emergency key we’d given my parents after a winter storm.

“Call my mother,” I said.

Daniel stepped into the hallway, but I could still hear him.

“Marta, why is there a moving truck at our house?”

He listened.

“What do you mean, you’re getting Jason settled?”

My stomach tightened.

“We don’t have a guest bedroom.”

Another pause.

Then his voice rose.

“You’re putting him in Olivia’s room?”

Olivia was our daughter, the little girl I’d spent nine months waiting to meet. Daniel and I had prepared her nursery together, painting the walls pale blue, assembling a white crib, and choosing a rocking chair where I imagined spending quiet nights feeding her.

My mother had helped us hang the curtains.

Now, apparently, she was giving the room to my brother.

Daniel returned and put the call on speaker.

“Hannah, sweetheart,” my mother began, “please don’t upset yourself. Jason’s lease ended, and he needed somewhere to stay. We’re just getting him settled until he finds another place.”

“In my baby’s room?”

“Well, yes. Olivia won’t use it right away. Newborns sleep with their parents for months.”

“Mom, where are you putting her crib?”

“In the garage. We’re being careful with everything.”

I stared at the ceiling.

The crib Daniel had spent an entire Saturday assembling was sitting in our garage so my unemployed brother could move his gaming equipment into our daughter’s bedroom.

“Put everything back,” Daniel said.

My mother sighed.

“Don’t speak to me like that. Jason needs stability, and Hannah has always understood that family comes first.”

“Hannah is having a baby right now.”

“Exactly. She has more important things to worry about than an empty bedroom.”

Then she said something I would remember for a long time.

“Once she gets home and sees that everything’s fine, she’ll calm down.”

Daniel disconnected.

I wanted to call her back, but another contraction hit, and I grabbed his hand.

“They’re inside our house,” I whispered.

“I know.”

“They’re moving our daughter’s things.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“We’ll deal with them. Right now, Olivia needs you.”

He was right, although I hated admitting it.

Our daughter arrived the following morning, healthy and furious at the world. When the nurse placed her against my chest, the situation at home temporarily disappeared from my mind.

For two days, Daniel and I lived in a blur of feeding schedules, hospital checks, and learning how to hold a newborn without feeling terrified.

Then we were discharged.

All I wanted was to take Olivia home, sit in the rocking chair we’d bought, and begin our life together.

Instead, Daniel opened our front door and stopped moving.

Cardboard boxes lined the hallway. Empty takeout containers covered the coffee table, and a pair of sneakers sat beside the couch.

From the back of the house came the unmistakable sound of a video game.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Daniel muttered.

I followed him down the hallway, carrying Olivia in her car seat.

The nursery door stood open.

Her crib was gone. So was the rocking chair. A mattress occupied one wall, and a large gaming desk stood beneath the window, crowded with monitors, cables, and empty soda cans.

Olivia’s clothes had been stuffed into three plastic bags.

Above the mattress hung the wooden sign Daniel had made.

OLIVIA.

My brother sat directly beneath it, wearing headphones and eating pizza.

He noticed us and lifted one earcup.

“Oh, hey. You’re back.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Where’s my daughter’s crib?”

“Garage, I think.”

“And her clothes?”

Jason pointed toward the bags.

“They’re right there. Nobody threw anything away.”

I looked at him.

“Why are you living in my baby’s nursery?”

He frowned.

“Because I needed somewhere to stay, Hannah. Mom explained everything.”

“She didn’t ask me.”

“It’s temporary. Don’t make it weird.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Get your computer off my daughter’s changing table.”

Jason rolled his eyes.

“Seriously? She’s two days old. She doesn’t even know she has a bedroom.”

I watched Daniel’s hands tighten into fists.

I touched his arm.

“Don’t.”

“Hannah, look what he’s done.”

“I see it.”

I placed Olivia’s car seat safely beside me, took out my phone, and photographed the room.

Jason frowned.

“What are you doing?”

“Taking pictures.”

“Why?”

“Because I want a record of what happened here.”

He laughed.

“You’re acting like somebody robbed you.”

My mother appeared in the doorway carrying a laundry basket.

“Hannah, please don’t start. You’ve just had a baby, and you need to rest.”

“You moved a grown man into my daughter’s nursery while I was giving birth.”

“Nobody damaged anything. We simply rearranged some furniture.”

“Without asking us.”

She rolled her eyes.

“I’m your mother. I have a key.”

“For emergencies. Not for moving people into my house.”

Her expression hardened.

“Jason is your brother. I didn’t think you’d be so heartless about helping him.”

I looked at the bags containing Olivia’s tiny clothes.

“You knew I’d say no.”

“I knew you’d overreact.”

That was when I opened my contacts.

“Who are you calling?” she demanded.

“Mr. Collins.”

Jason snorted.

“You’re calling a lawyer over a bedroom?”

I waited for our attorney to answer.

“Mr. Collins, it’s Hannah Mitchell. Someone has moved into our house without our permission, and I need your advice.”

He asked several questions about ownership, access, and whether the situation had become threatening.

I answered each one.

Then he said he could come over with the paperwork from an earlier matter involving Jason. He also recommended requesting an officer to keep the peace if the argument continued.

When I hung up, my mother looked offended.

“You’re going to involve the police in a family disagreement?”

“I’m going to make sure this is handled properly.”

“You’ve got some nerve, Hannah. After everything we’ve done for you.”

“You could have asked permission.”

“You were in labor!”

“Exactly. Why did you choose that moment?”

She looked away.

Twenty minutes later, someone knocked.

Mr. Collins stood on our porch with a blue folder under his arm. A uniformed officer accompanied him.

Jason followed me into the hallway, still complaining about how ridiculous I was being.

Then he saw the folder.

His expression changed.

“Wait. Why is he here?”
