Why Queen Camilla Has the Power to Direct Kate Middleton to Change Her Outfit: Exploring the Royal Family’s Rules and Protocol

The royal family observes many traditions, from dining etiquette to behavior at official events and how guests should be greeted.

According to a source close to the Queen’s official dresser, Camilla made a specific request involving Princess Kate and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh. While all three are comfortable wearing blue for formal occasions, the final decision still rests with the Queen.

As Queen, Camilla holds the authority to decide which causes or matters to prioritize — even down to wardrobe choices within the Royal Family.

According to The Express, Camilla has been known to enforce specific rules about who can wear certain colors. Her personal stylist, Jacqui Meakin, reportedly had to test several fabric samples — even “dyeing a few pens” at the palace — to meet the Queen’s standards. Blue is often a key color in these guidelines.

Eventually, Kate and Sophie were permitted to wear blue as well, but only if the shade was bold enough, despite Camilla’s earlier reputation for being quite particular.

An insider explained: “The Queen now gets first pick of her outfit before other royal women. It’s part of the royal pecking order, which even extends to clothing and color choices.” Blue remains a favorite for both the Queen and Kate — and Sophie is quite fond of it, too.

“At first, Jacqui [Meakin] was hesitant to wear blue around the Queen,” a source shared, “but now she’s comfortable with it — as long as the blues are clearly different.” What could’ve been tense ended up being amusing, and the women all saw the funny side.

What started as a strict dress rule eventually turned into something more lighthearted. Although Camilla had initially laid down firm guidelines on color choices — especially when it came to blue — the issue was later resolved with humor and compromise. Kate and Sophie, both known for wearing blue, were given the green light to continue doing so, provided their shades weren’t too similar to the Queen’s. This way, the royal hierarchy stayed intact.

This situation shines a light on how detailed royal traditions can be, but it also proves that even within such a structured world, a little flexibility and laughter go a long way.

What began as a possible source of tension has now become a friendly and playful understanding among the royal women — a balance between tradition, individuality, and mutual respect.
