Royal fans saddened after hearing Prince George’s three-word complaint at public appearance

As this year’s Wimbledon Men’s Final brought out the royal family in full force, one old video of Prince George attending the tournament has sparked renewed sympathy from fans online.

On Sunday, July 13, the Prince and Princess of Wales arrived at Centre Court with Prince George, 11, and Princess Charlotte, 10, to watch the finals. Their youngest son, Prince Louis, who is just seven, remained at home — younger than both of his siblings were when they first made their Wimbledon debuts.

But attention turned away from the match when royal watchers began circulating a 2022 clip of Prince George attending the event for the first time. In the footage, the young royal, then just eight years old, is heard quietly saying, “It’s too hot,” as he makes his way into the tournament with his parents. Prince William tries to reassure him, while Princess Kate offers a sympathetic remark: “You just have to feel for the people sitting in the bright sunshine.”

Many viewers have since commented on how sad the moment felt, especially given the unusually high temperatures Wimbledon is often known for. The royal dress code, however, left George in a full suit and tie — something fans found hard to watch.

Social media reacts to George’s formalwear in the heat

As the clip made the rounds again during this year’s heatwave, many took to social media to express frustration and concern over the strict dress code enforced in the Royal Box. “Maybe let the kid wear summer clothes in the hot sun,” one person wrote. “The public doesn’t expect to see a child in a full suit.”

Another user asked, “Why does he always have to be dressed up in a hot suit?” while others sympathized with the pressure of tradition at such a young age. One viewer simply said, “Poor lad—shirt and tie is a bit much for hot weather.”

To clarify, the Royal Box at Wimbledon does require formal attire for all attendees. Men must wear jackets and ties, and women are expected to dress in “smart” outfits. According to Wimbledon’s official policy, even hats are discouraged for women to prevent obstructing views.

Still, the debate continues over whether young royal children should be held to the same standard — especially under sweltering summer conditions. Some suggested a compromise: “A smart polo shirt and trousers would be ideal. Still appropriate, without him perishing!”

Despite the moment passing quietly in 2022, the resurfaced video has sparked a broader discussion this year about balancing tradition with comfort — particularly when it comes to young members of the Royal Family facing the expectations of public life.
