Prince William faces backlash after taking Princess Charlotte to football game

The Women’s Euro 2025 final on Sunday saw England claim a thrilling 3-1 victory over Spain after penalties, and the match had an extra royal highlight. Prince William attended the game at St Jakobs Park in Basel with his 10-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte. The pair were seen cheering enthusiastically as the Lionesses secured the trophy.

Online debate over royal attendance

While many fans celebrated seeing Princess Charlotte supporting the women’s squad, some social media users questioned the absence of her brothers, Prince George and Prince Louis. Critics suggested that bringing only Charlotte might send the wrong message about how the family values women’s football.

One commenter asked why Prince George, known to be a passionate football fan, was not present, while others speculated that the choice reflected outdated gender roles. Comparisons were even made with Spain’s royal family, where Infanta Sofia has been seen attending men’s games with her father, King Felipe.

However, not everyone agreed with the criticism. Many defended the decision, pointing out that Prince William may have simply wanted to share the experience with his daughter, as he has previously attended football events with Prince George. Others noted that travel rules may prevent Prince William and Prince George from flying together now that George is 12.

Celebrations and royal praise for the Lionesses

Despite the online debate, the focus remained on England’s remarkable win. After the match, Prince William praised the team on social media, writing: “What a game! Lionesses, you are the champions of Europe. We couldn’t be prouder of the whole team. Enjoy this moment England.”

King Charles III also congratulated the squad, applauding their skill, teamwork, and the pride they brought to the nation. He ended his message with an encouraging nod to the future, urging the team to aim for the World Cup in 2027.

With this victory, the Lionesses continue to inspire fans across the country, proving once again that football truly is for everyone.
