Princess Catherine’s Response After Being Mistaken For Prince William’s Assistant Left Fans In Stitches

The Prince and Princess of Wales may be one of the most recognisable couples in the world, admired not only across the United Kingdom but around the globe.

Yet, their high profile doesn’t protect them from the occasional public faux pas. One particular encounter revealed that even members of the royal family can be mistaken for staff — though few would handle it as gracefully and humorously as Catherine, Princess of Wales.

A Quick-Witted Response in Scotland

During an engagement in Scotland, Catherine once again proved her charm and quick thinking. Following her much-anticipated return to public engagements, the 43-year-old royal has impressed admirers with her warmth and confidence. One story, shared by Prince William himself, showed just how effortlessly she can turn an awkward moment into something memorable.

William recalled that in 2020, while visiting a local charity, someone in the crowd assumed Catherine was attending in the capacity of his assistant. The idea that the future Queen Consort could be mistaken for staff surprised many — but Catherine took it in stride, sparing the individual any embarrassment and adding a touch of humour.

“Well I Am Your Assistant!”

Speaking at a community event in Scotland, Prince William described the moment, which took place at Shire Hall Care Home in Cardiff, Wales, during a round of engagements in August 2020. At the time, the couple were wearing masks due to COVID-19, when William remarked to a resident, Joan Drew-Smith:

“We have to wear masks because of the virus, but it’s difficult to hear sometimes when you can’t see someone’s mouth.”

Joan then gestured towards Catherine and asked:

“Is that your assistant?”

Without missing a beat, Catherine placed a hand on William’s shoulder and replied with a smile:

“Well I am your assistant! I have been for a long time!”

Later, William fondly told staff at the facility:

“I love Joan, she’s brilliant. If only everyone was as honest as her.”

The Public’s Favourite Candid Moments

The exchange was one of many unplanned moments that have helped endear the royal couple to the public. While their official work continues to focus on key causes such as mental health, early childhood development, and community outreach, these lighter interactions often capture just as much attention.

In November 2023, Catherine was at Burghead Primary School in Moray, Scotland, when a pupil asked who she was. Her playful answer:

“Who am I? I’m married to William.”

With the Princess of Wales once again appearing at public events, royal watchers can expect more charming moments from William and Catherine in the months ahead.
