Since becoming king, Charles has made it clear that he wants to modernize the monarchy, often showing a more approachable side during public outings. He is known to pause, chat with onlookers, and even throw in the occasional joke. That sense of humor was on display again this week when he welcomed Donald and Melania Trump to Windsor Castle.
The Trumps arrived in the UK on September 16 following an invitation from the King. It marked the first time in history that a U.S. president has undertaken two state visits to Britain. The couple were initially greeted by Prince William and Princess Kate before meeting King Charles and Queen Camilla.
Charles spent much of the day with Donald Trump, while Melania joined engagements alongside Kate and Camilla. But it was during the formal greeting at Windsor that the monarch’s quick wit surfaced.
According to forensic lipreader Nicola Hickling, Donald Trump began the exchange by saying, “How are you doing, it’s a pleasure, Your Majesty. Thank you for inviting me.” Charles then turned to the First Lady, whose wide-brimmed purple hat partly shaded her face, and joked: “I do hope the wind doesn’t blow away your hat.” Melania reportedly burst out laughing at the remark.
Her choice of hat quickly drew attention, as it often has in the past. From her black Inauguration Day hat in 2017 to this latest bold accessory, her headwear has regularly sparked debate. Fashion stylist Marian Kwei told the BBC she believed the purple hat was deliberate: “The wide-brimmed hat that hides her face points to an attitude where she wants all eyes to be on her husband and his agenda while they are here.”
The lighthearted exchange between Charles and Melania was a reminder of the King’s personable style, one he has carried into encounters with ordinary members of the public as well as world leaders.
