BBC sparks complaints for ‘disrespectful’ blunder over Princess Kate’s name

The BBC has come under heavy criticism from royal fans after making what appeared to be a slip-up regarding Princess Kate’s name during a live broadcast on Tuesday, November 11.

The mistake occurred during coverage of the Princess of Wales’ appearance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

Princess Kate Leads Remembrance Service

Princess Kate attended the Remembrance Day service dressed in an elegant all-black ensemble, featuring a military-style coat and a wide-brimmed hat. She led the solemn ceremony and laid a wreath in memory of those who lost their lives in battle.

Joined by veterans, military families, and senior officials, the Princess of Wales paid tribute to the fallen with her characteristic grace and composure.

However, during the BBC’s coverage of the event, the broadcaster repeatedly referred to her by her maiden name, “Kate Middleton,” instead of her full royal title, Catherine, Princess of Wales.

Royal Fans Slam the BBC

The error quickly drew outrage from royal watchers, many of whom took to social media to voice their frustration, calling the mistake “disrespectful.”

One viewer fumed on X (formerly Twitter): “Can’t believe the appalling coverage on BBC. The Princess of Wales being referred to as Kate Middleton!”

Another added: “Can somebody have a word with your reporter at the National Memorial Arboretum – she should not be referring to the Princess of Wales as ‘Kate Middleton’!!”

A third wrote: “How dare the BBC once again be disrespectful to the Princess of Wales at the wreath laying. Several times, the presenter used her maiden name. I’m fuming! I’d name and shame if I knew who she was.”

Honoring Princess Diana at Remembrance Sunday

Just days earlier, on Sunday, November 9, Princess Kate attended the annual Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London.

Standing on the balcony alongside Queen Camilla, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, and the Duke of Kent, Kate paid her respects while the King, Prince William, and Prince Edward took part in the ceremony below.

Her outfit once again reflected the solemnity of the occasion. She wore a black coat, an asymmetrical hat, and a lace ruffle scarf, paired with pearl drop earrings once belonging to Princess Diana. The look was completed with a poppy and an RAF brooch — a tribute to her grandfather, Peter Middleton, who served as a fighter pilot during World War II.

A Weekend of Remembrance

The night before, Kate attended the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall alongside King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince Edward, and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh.

Royal fans were particularly delighted to see her accompanied by her eldest son, Prince George. However, the young royal was not present at Sunday’s service.

The reason, according to royal tradition, is simply his age. Prince George is only 12 years old — and, as royal watchers point out, Prince William did not attend his first Remembrance Sunday service until he was 22. It seems George will have to wait a few more years before joining the solemn ceremony himself.
