Don’t sleep with your pets, don’t risk your life, here’s why

How close is your bond with your pet? Do you cuddle with them, give them kisses, or even share a bed? While this kind of close connection can strengthen your relationship, experts have mixed opinions. The companionship of a dog or cat can be great for your well-being, but it also comes with potential health risks.

Diseases That Can Be Passed from Pets to Humans

There are around 250 known zoonotic diseases—those that can be transmitted between animals and humans. More than 100 of these are linked to household pets.

Downsides of Letting Your Pet Sleep in Your Bed

  • Hygiene Concerns: Pets spend a lot of time outdoors, rolling in grass and dirt. You might not always know what they’ve come into contact with—dead animals, unclean surfaces, or even other animals carrying fleas or ticks. They can track in bacteria and tiny traces of feces, which isn’t exactly ideal for your home.
  • Sleep Disruptions: If you’re a light sleeper, having a pet in your bed can be a challenge. Cats, in particular, tend to be more active at night, and sudden movements or playful behavior could keep you from getting a full night’s rest.
  • Hard to Break the Habit: Once your pet is used to sleeping with you, changing this routine can be tough. If a new partner moves in or you decide you want your bed to yourself, your pet might protest—scratching at the door or barking until they get back in.
Health Risks of Sleeping with Pets

Some potential health issues that could arise include:

  • Allergies: If you’re prone to allergies, having your pet in bed might make things worse. Pets shed hair and dander, which can trigger allergic reactions and make it harder to sleep peacefully.
  • Hookworms: These parasites can live in your dog’s small intestine and may be passed on to humans, causing infections.
  • Respiratory Issues: Dogs can carry dust, fungi, and other particles that may affect lung health, potentially leading to conditions like asthma.
  • Intestinal Parasites: Pets can also introduce intestinal parasites into your home, which can be especially harmful to children.
