Gene Hackman and wife’s last public photos revealed

Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were discovered lifeless in their Santa Fe home earlier this week, leaving fans and loved ones in shock. Tributes have been pouring in from around the world as people reflect on the legendary actor’s life and career.

In his later years, Hackman largely stepped away from the spotlight, making only a handful of rare public appearances. However, curiosity about his final years has resurfaced, with many wondering about the last time he was seen in public.

Just a year before his passing, the French Connection star was spotted out in public for the first time in over two decades.

Hackman was 95 years old when he passed away, while his wife, Arakawa, was 63. Their beloved dog also died alongside them at their New Mexico residence on February 26, 2025.

Santa Fe County officials released a statement confirming, “We can confirm that both Gene Hackman and his wife were found deceased Wednesday afternoon at their residence on Sunset Trail.”

Although an investigation is underway, authorities have stated, “This is an active investigation – however, at this time we do not believe that foul play was a factor.”

The couple’s final public outing took place last year—marking Hackman’s first public sighting in nearly 21 years. Photographs from that rare appearance captured the two leaving Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Hackman, using a cane, was seen holding onto his wife’s arm for support. Some of these images have surfaced on X.

Hackman and Arakawa’s love story began in Los Angeles, where she worked part-time at a fitness center. The two started dating in 1984 and went on to build a life together, staying by each other’s side for decades.

Gene Hackman and his first wife, Faye Maltese, were married for three decades before parting ways in 1986. The couple, who tied the knot in 1956, had three children together: Leslie Anne, Elizabeth Jean, and Christopher Allen.

The legendary actor, best known for unforgettable performances in films like Mississippi Burning and Behind Enemy Lines, stepped away from acting in 2004 due to concerns about his health.

In a 2009 interview, Hackman reflected on the moment that solidified his decision to retire: “The straw that broke the camel’s back was actually a stress test that I took in New York.” He went on to explain, “The doctor advised me that my heart wasn’t in the kind of shape that I should be putting it under any stress.”

Throughout his illustrious career, which spanned from 1961 to 2004, Hackman built a remarkable legacy in Hollywood, starring in a total of 79 feature films. His talent and dedication earned him numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards, two BAFTAs, four Golden Globes, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Celebrated director Francis Ford Coppola, who collaborated with Hackman on The Conversation (1974), paid tribute to the late star, saying, “The loss of a great artist, always cause for both mourning and celebration: Gene Hackman a great actor, inspiring and magnificent in his work and complexity. I mourn his loss, and celebrate his existence and contribution.”

The passing of such an extraordinary talent is truly a great loss. Our thoughts are with his loved ones, including his wife, Betsy Arakawa, and all those grieving the legendary Gene Hackman.
