Meghan Markle finally breaks silence on ‘cringe’ labour dance video with direct message to critics

Earlier this month, Meghan Markle sparked mixed reactions online after posting a lighthearted video featuring her and Prince Harry dancing in a delivery room — a clip she shared to celebrate their daughter Princess Lilibet’s fourth birthday. Now, the Duchess of Sussex is addressing the criticism directly.

The video, posted on June 4, shows Meghan and Harry playfully dancing — including a bit of twerking — in what appeared to be a joyful moment just before Lilibet’s birth in 2021. “Four years ago today, this also happened,” Meghan captioned the clip, referencing their efforts to get labor started when more traditional methods had failed.

While many fans applauded the couple’s candidness and Meghan’s willingness to show a fun, unfiltered side of motherhood, others were quick to label the video as inappropriate or “cringe.”

Online detractors accused the couple of oversharing and diminishing the dignity of the royal image. “Unbelievable they still have royal titles,” one commenter wrote.

Now, Meghan has opened up about the incident during a conversation on the Aspire podcast, hosted by Emma Grede. Preview footage shows Meghan discussing the reaction to the now-viral video — and standing by her decision to post it.

“You have to be authentic,” Meghan said during the episode. “Did you see my ‘Baby Momma’ dance?”

Grede admitted she’d seen the clip and even “cheered” when it appeared online. “I love that you showed joy and didn’t care what people thought,” she told Meghan. “That’s what we need to see more of.”

Meghan was quick to clarify that the footage wasn’t recent — something she felt many critics misunderstood.

“By the way, that wasn’t yesterday,” she said. “That was four years ago. It’s a reminder that behind all the noise and opinions, life goes on — and sometimes it’s really beautiful and full of laughter.”

The Duchess also shared that she’s grateful to be active on social media again, but in a way that gives her control: “Now that I’m sharing things on my own terms, I can be selective. I don’t have to explain everything. I can just… be me.”

Her response has earned support not only from fans, but also from healthcare professionals. One midwife took to X (formerly Twitter) to defend Meghan’s movements in the video, noting that dancing during early labor is not unusual — and often encouraged.

“I’m a midwife,” the user wrote. “This isn’t cringe — it’s actually a great way to help progress labor naturally.”

Another user had questioned why Meghan’s IV line wasn’t connected, to which the midwife explained: “It’s a saline lock — very common in early labor before fluids or medication are needed.”

Responding to skeptics who said, “No one in early labor dances like that,” she added: “Actually, many do. It’s called a ‘labour dance,’ and yes — I’ve seen it plenty of times.”
