Prince George will be forced to follow ‘sad’ rule in 24 hours and royal fans are seriously divided

As Prince George celebrates his 12th birthday on Monday, July 22, the young royal will quietly reach a new milestone in royal life — one that has sparked conversation among fans across the world.

The eldest son of Prince William and Princess Kate, George is second in line to the British throne. And with each passing year, he steps closer toward his future role as King — including now having to follow a traditional royal protocol that restricts how he travels.

Why Prince George may no longer fly with his father

From the age of 12, royal protocol suggests that two direct heirs to the throne — such as Prince William and Prince George — should not travel together on the same flight. The custom, while rarely enforced in recent years, is meant to protect the line of succession in the event of a tragic accident.

Prince Charles (now King Charles III) and Prince William both began following this rule around the same age. While official policy on this has sometimes been relaxed — particularly in George’s earlier childhood when he flew with both parents — it is expected that the guidelines will be more closely followed as he approaches his teenage years.

Kensington Palace has not issued a formal statement about any changes to Prince George’s travel arrangements. However, tradition holds strong influence in royal circles, and observers note that adjustments may be quietly introduced behind the scenes.

Public reaction: Outdated or necessary?

News of the tradition has generated a mix of reactions online. Some social media users questioned whether the rule is still relevant in modern times, calling it “unfair” or “too old-fashioned.” Others expressed concern about the emotional impact of separating a child from his father during travel.

However, many royal watchers defended the protocol, noting that it’s a longstanding precaution rooted in preserving national stability. Others pointed out that George could still travel with his mother, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — maintaining close family ties while honoring tradition.

One user commented: “It’s sad, but also understandable. He’s being prepared for his future, and that comes with responsibility.” Another added: “Every royal heir has done the same. He’ll be just fine.”

As Prince George grows older, more duties and decisions will likely come his way — both in public and private. But for now, as he marks his 12th birthday, the spotlight turns to a young boy balancing childhood with the responsibilities of a royal legacy.
