Princess Kate made a memorable comeback to royal banquet duties on Tuesday evening, attending a state dinner at Windsor Castle in a bold red cape gown designed by Sarah Burton for Givenchy.
A Fashion Choice With Deeper Meaning
Kate’s decision to wear Givenchy stood out—not just for its elegance, but also for its symbolic undertone. The French fashion house famously created Meghan Markle’s wedding dress for her 2018 marriage to Prince Harry, also held at Windsor Castle.
Traditionally, Kate has leaned towards British designers for important royal events, so her choice to wear a brand so closely linked to Meghan sparked speculation about its possible message.
A New Chapter for Sarah Burton and Kate
This gown also marked the first time Princess Kate has worn a new Sarah Burton design since the designer left Alexander McQueen and joined Givenchy as creative director in late 2024.
Burton had spent nearly 30 years at the British label, where she designed Kate’s own wedding dress in 2011. Her move to Givenchy represented a major change in the high-fashion world, and Kate’s continued collaboration with Burton signifies a lasting professional connection.
Tiara Return Marks a Public Comeback
Kate completed the regal look with Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara—her first time wearing it since December 2023. This was also her first tiara appearance since announcing her cancer remission earlier this year, symbolizing a slow but steady return to formal royal duties. The banquet was held in honor of French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron during their state visit to the UK.
A Gradual Step Back Into Public Life
Hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla, the state dinner saw key members of the Royal Family in attendance, including Prince William. Ahead of the event, the Prince and Princess of Wales posted a photo with the caption, “Ready for what promises to be a wonderful State Banquet this evening in Windsor.”
Although Kate participated in the Qatar state visit in December 2024, she did not attend that banquet, making this event even more significant as her first formal gala appearance since beginning her cancer treatment.
Kate Opens Up About Post-Treatment Struggles
Earlier in July, during a visit to Colchester Hospital, Kate spoke candidly about her recovery journey. “You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment,” she said. “Treatment’s done, then it’s like, ‘I can crack on, get back to normal,’ but actually, the phase afterwards is really, really difficult.” Her appearance at the state banquet highlights her ongoing effort to balance public responsibilities with personal healing.
