Queen Camilla leaves Balmoral Castle just days after arriving as Her Majesty is pictured in York

Queen Camilla briefly left Balmoral Castle this week to attend the second day of the Ebor Festival at York Racecourse, just days after arriving in Scotland for the summer stay with King Charles.

Honoring the World’s Best Race

At the event, the 78-year-old royal unveiled a plaque celebrating the Juddmonte International being named the World’s Best Race of 2024 by the Longines World Racing Awards.

Camilla, a passionate racing fan and official patron of York Racecourse since June last year, was warmly welcomed by dignitaries including Chris Legard, Vice Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Bridget Guerin, Chairman of the York Race Committee, and Chief Executive William Derby. She also greeted York’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Martin Rowley BEM, before taking the salute from the RAF Falcons parachute team.

An Elegant Appearance

The Queen arrived in a pale blue coat paired with a wide-brimmed cream hat finished with a bow. Later, she removed the coat to reveal a floral dress in shades of white, blue, and red, featuring puff sleeves and a pleated skirt.

Her accessories included a four-strand pearl and diamond necklace, pearl earrings, and stacked gold and silver bracelets. She carried a beige woven Bottega Veneta handbag, perfectly matched with suede kitten heels.

A Day with Racegoers and Charities

Alongside unveiling the plaque, Camilla was scheduled to present the Yorkshire Oaks trophy to the winning connections. She also spent time meeting racegoers and spoke with representatives of local charities supported by the course.

This visit follows her appearance at York Racecourse last year, when she cut the ribbon on the refurbished Bustardthorpe Stand, first opened in 1913, and toured the grounds before enjoying the races from the royal box.

Camilla’s dedication to horse racing mirrors that of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Reports suggest she has taken over the late monarch’s stables while King Charles focuses on other areas of royal duty.

As Duchess of Cornwall, she supported many equestrian organizations, including the Ebony Horse Club, the British Equestrian Federation, and the Brooke Hospital for Animals. In 2013, she joined Queen Elizabeth in visiting the Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, which provides urban children with the chance to experience riding.

Summer at Balmoral

Despite her appearance in York, Camilla remains based at Balmoral with the King during the family’s traditional summer gathering. On Sunday, she accompanied Charles to church, waving to locals as he drove them to the service.

Earlier this week, she enjoyed a shopping trip in nearby Ballater with her daughter Laura Lopes and granddaughter Eliza. Camilla wore a floral midi dress with a jade cardigan and wedge heels, while her daughter chose a denim jacket and wide-leg trousers, and Eliza paired jeans with a cropped T-shirt.

Just last Friday, the King and Queen were visibly moved during a Service of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The ceremony, marking 80 years since the end of the Second World War, included emotional testimonies from VJ Day veterans and was attended by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
