I Spent Our Fifth Anniversary Preparing The Same Dinner My Husband Loved When We Were Newlyweds. When I Reached His Office, I Found Him Kissing His Young Intern Beside The Desk. The Dinner Fell From My Hands, But I Never Raised My Voice. I Had Already Seen The Choice He Could Never Explain Away.

Part 2 of 3

“Gabriel, how did you find this place?” she asked.

“My company needs access across the southern boundary, but I did not know you owned the property until yesterday.”

Her expression became guarded. “Your attorney threatened to take the road after I refused his offer.”

“Daniel dismissed him, and no condemnation action was authorized.”

“That does not erase the fear he created.”

“You are right, and my company will correct the situation without requiring anything from you.”

Rebecca glanced toward the black vehicle near the gate. The sight of Daniel probably made my unexpected arrival appear like another corporate ambush.

“Please leave before my guests notice something is wrong,” she said.

I had imagined finding Rebecca many times during our separation. In those fantasies, she listened to apologies, accepted explanations, or admitted she had missed me. Every imaginary reunion centered on what I wanted rather than the life she might have built.

“I will leave immediately, and I will not return without your permission,” I answered.

Surprise crossed her face because the former version of me would have argued until resistance became exhaustion.

Before I reached the steps, a child ran around the side of the inn carrying a wooden airplane. He wore a navy jacket, had Rebecca’s mouth, and possessed the same gray-blue eyes I saw every morning.

“Mom, Caleb took the red truck again,” he announced before noticing me.

A second boy appeared several seconds later wearing a matching jacket. He was slightly taller, with untidy brown hair and my father’s unmistakable dimple.

Rebecca moved quickly between the children and me.

“Owen, please take Caleb inside and find your grandmother,” she said.

The boys studied me before obeying. When the door closed, I held the porch railing because the ground seemed to move beneath me.

“How old are they?” I asked.

Rebecca’s face lost its remaining color.

“We cannot discuss this beside the entrance.”

“They are my sons, and they are four years old.”

Her silence confirmed everything before she finally nodded.

I stepped backward, struggling to breathe around years that suddenly contained birthdays, illnesses, Christmas mornings, bedtime stories, and first words I had never witnessed.

Rebecca’s mother appeared behind the screen door, and the sadness in her expression revealed that both parents had known.

“Everyone knew except me,” I said.

“Your anger is understandable, but the boys must not witness it,” Rebecca answered.

I looked toward the upstairs window, where two small faces briefly appeared before disappearing behind a curtain.

“I will not involve corporate counsel or attempt to remove them from you,” I said. “However, I need time to understand what has happened.”

Fear crossed Rebecca’s face, and its presence revealed why she had remained silent. She believed my wealth could become a weapon strong enough to dismantle the life she had created.

“You do not know what you will do after the shock fades,” she said.

“That is true, but I know our children will not become leverage in a conflict between us.”

I returned to the car before grief overwhelmed whatever control remained. Halfway down the lane, my legs stopped cooperating, and I sat on a low stone wall beside the road.

Daniel joined me without speaking.

“They are my sons, and I missed every day of their lives,” I eventually said.

He remained beside me while I cried with an intensity that four years of therapy had never reached.

What Rebecca Feared and What I Had Lost

Rebecca called the following morning and requested a meeting inside a quiet café in town. She asked me to come without Daniel, attorneys, investigators, or security personnel.

When I arrived, she sat near the window with both hands surrounding untouched tea.

“Do you plan to file for custody?” she asked before I had removed my coat.

“I have not contacted a lawyer, although I want a meaningful relationship with my sons.”

“That does not answer whether you might try later.”

“I will not seek to separate them from you or relocate them from the only home they know.”

Rebecca watched me carefully.

“Four years ago, I would not have believed that answer,” she said.

“Four years ago, I would have hired three law firms before understanding what the boys needed, so your fear was not imaginary.”

Acknowledging that truth appeared to unsettle her more than denial would have.

I asked why she had never told me, and Rebecca described finding a positive pregnancy test while living beneath her middle name at a roadside hotel. She almost called me until a photograph appeared online showing Madeline holding my arm outside a corporate event.

The photograph had captured Madeline attempting to apologize publicly, but Rebecca interpreted it as evidence that the relationship continued.

Six months after the twins were born, Madeline contacted Rebecca and admitted that our kiss had been the only physical encounter. The clarification did not repair what had happened because the betrayal remained a choice rather than an ongoing affair.

“After learning the truth, why did you continue hiding the children?” I asked.

Rebecca stared at the street beyond the window.

“At first, I protected them from the unstable man your chief operating officer described to my father,” she said. “Later, I protected the peaceful life I had built because I was afraid you would arrive and reorganize everything around your preferences.”

Anger rose beneath my grief, and honesty required acknowledging it.

“You took four years from me, Rebecca, and nothing I did granted you the right to erase my fatherhood.”

Tears gathered in her eyes, although she did not look away.

“I know, and I understood it whenever Owen asked whether his father shared his eyes,” she said. “I understood it whenever Caleb wanted to mail a birthday drawing to somebody whose address he did not know.”

“Did you ever intend to tell me?”

Her hesitation became another wound.

“I kept waiting for a moment when telling you would not destroy everything, but that moment never arrived.”

“There was never going to be a painless moment.”
