Moral Stories Life Short Tales

My Husband’s Secretary Grabbed His Arm At A Gala And Asked Me, “Who Exactly Are You, And Why Are You Touching My Fiancé?” More Than A Hundred Guests Turned To Watch. I Looked At My Husband, Waiting For Three Simple Words—“She Is My Wife.” He Raised His Glass And Said Nothing.

Part 2 of 3

I had forgotten those words during my marriage.

I would not forget them again.

Apex Capital was not purchasing Salcedo Holdings outright.

The arrangement was strategic.

Apex would contribute capital and international connections.

I would retain ownership influence over Salcedo Holdings and directly control several newly established investment divisions.

Our first major negotiation concerned Emerald Bay.

Alcazar Development had won the project.

What it did not have was enough liquidity to begin construction.

Apex Capital would provide the financing.

Salcedo Holdings would receive substantial ownership and financial oversight in exchange.

Two days later, I sat across from Roderick in his own executive office.

The power dynamic had changed completely.

I was no longer the hidden wife waiting inside a private apartment.

I now controlled whether his most prestigious project survived.

I opened the proposal.

“We require thirty percent ownership of Emerald Bay.”

Roderick closed the document.

His jaw tightened.

“You are taking advantage of a temporary liquidity problem.”

“I am conducting business according to the same Wall Street standards you have praised for years.”

He leaned forward.

“Alcazar will offer twenty percent. Nothing more.”

I did not move.

“Thirty percent, plus full financial oversight for Apex Capital.”

Roderick stared at me.

His anger was obvious.

His options were not.

Without our capital, Emerald Bay could not move forward.

Several long minutes passed.

Eventually, he signed.

When I began collecting the documents, he spoke bitterly.

“Is this entire arrangement your way of punishing me?”

I looked at him.

“You are overestimating your importance again. I have simply stopped sacrificing my interests to protect yours.”

Part 3: The Financial Trail Behind Camille

That afternoon, my private attorney, Daniel Serrano, delivered a report that changed the situation again.

While examining marital assets and past financial activity, he discovered several incidents of insider trading and short selling involving Salcedo Holdings stock.

The suspicious trades occurred shortly before a major decline in our share price two years earlier.

The transactions had been routed through Delaware shell companies.

Those companies were connected to Camille Velez and several members of her family.

I invited Camille to meet me at an exclusive café in SoHo.

She arrived wearing oversized Celine sunglasses and carrying a Hermès handbag.

The arrogance she displayed at The Plaza had returned.

She sat down and smiled.

“Did you call me because you finally understand that Roderick never loved you?”

I pushed the trading records across the table.

Her smile disappeared immediately.

Her eyes stopped on the account numbers.

“What are these supposed to be?”

“Evidence that your family used confidential information obtained from Alcazar Development to short shares of Salcedo Holdings.”

I leaned back.

“I suspect the Securities and Exchange Commission will be extremely interested.”

Camille became pale.

Her fingers trembled slightly.

“You cannot prove I had anything to do with those trades.”

“Actually, I can establish your involvement.”

I paused.

“That is why I am speaking to you privately before investigators do. Who gave your father the confidential information? Was it Roderick?”

Camille looked around the café.

Her reaction surprised me.

I had expected arrogance.

Instead, I saw fear.

Not the fear of someone confidently participating in a conspiracy.

The fear of someone trapped inside one.

“You have seventy-two hours to report yourself voluntarily and cooperate with investigators.”

That evening, Roderick came to my apartment.

He insisted he knew nothing about Camille using information from Alcazar Development to manipulate Salcedo Holdings stock.

I refused to discuss it.

“Explain that to your corporation’s legal department. Do not bring it into my home.”

The following day, Camille called.

She asked me to meet her privately in an underground parking garage.

When she arrived, she wore no makeup.

The polished confidence was gone.

“My father used information I obtained from office computers,” she admitted. “He said the profits would give us enough money to stop depending on Roderick.”

I watched her carefully.

“Who is ‘us’?”

Camille looked at me with a mixture of anger and desperation.

“Roderick never told you why he rushed into a secret marriage, did he?”

I said nothing.

“Ask him about the shares he transferred to my father. Then ask him who Sofía is.”

Before I could stop her, Camille got into her car and drove away.

Daniel spent the next four days reviewing corporate filings, private trusts, share transfers, and archived documents.

What he found destroyed the final illusion surrounding my marriage.

A year earlier, Roderick had quietly transferred a significant block of Alcazar Development shares to Hector Velez, Camille’s father.

Hector was also a construction contractor with a record filled with questionable dealings.

But the shares were not the worst discovery.

A private trust had been created for Camille and a three-and-a-half-year-old girl.

Sofía Velez.

Sofía had been born before Roderick married me.

Camille had not appeared after our marriage began.

She had been there before I ever entered his life.

I ordered Roderick to come to my office.

When he arrived, I threw the trust documents onto the table.

“Who is Sofía?”

Roderick looked at the papers.

Then he closed his eyes.

The color disappeared from his face.

The man who could negotiate Wall Street transactions worth hundreds of millions suddenly could not look at me.

Finally, he answered.

“Sofía is my daughter.”

I had expected the possibility.

Hearing him say it still stole the air from my lungs.

“She was born before our wedding.”

I pushed the papers toward him.

“So your story about hiding our marriage to protect Alcazar Development was another calculated lie.”

Roderick lowered his head.

“Camille and I have a complicated history.”

I laughed without humor.

He continued.

“When Sofía was born, Hector threatened to expose everything publicly. He said he would destroy my family’s reputation.”
