“Did You Really Do That To The Young Assistant?” My Husband’s Best Friend Asked Him In Disbelief. Neither Of Them Knew I Had Come Home Early And Overheard Everything They Said, Leaving Me Convinced My Husband Was Having An Affair. But A Few Days Later, I Discovered The Truth Was Even Worse…

Part 2 of 3

There was no meaningful website.

No staff page.

No portfolio.

No evidence of real consulting work.

The registered representative was a man named Elliot Marsh, someone I had never heard of.

I finally understood one thing clearly.

Daniel was hiding something serious.

I still did not know whether he was exposing wrongdoing or participating in it.

PART 4: MEGAN TELLS ME THE TRUTH

On Monday, I visited Canyon Crest pretending I wanted to surprise Daniel with lunch.

The receptionist told me he was in a meeting and invited me to wait.

Then I saw Megan walking toward the copy room.

Her face changed slightly when she recognized me.

“Mrs. Mercer.”

“Rachel is fine.”

She smiled nervously.

I asked whether she could speak somewhere private.

We entered an unused conference room.

Once the door closed, I stopped pretending.

“I followed Daniel Friday night.”

Color vanished from her face.

“What?”

“I saw you at the hotel.”

Megan looked toward the door.

“Rachel, I can explain—”

“I also heard Brandon talking to Daniel earlier.”

She closed her eyes.

I continued.

“He asked whether Daniel had really done something to his young assistant, and Daniel said almost.”

“Oh God.”

She sat down heavily.

I asked the question directly.

“Are you sleeping with my husband?”

Her response was immediate.

“No. Absolutely not.”

I believed her.

She looked offended, frightened, and exhausted rather than guilty.

“Then tell me what is happening.”

Megan stared at the table.

“I don’t know who I can trust.”

“Can you trust Daniel?”

Her silence lasted too long.

“That’s what I’m trying to determine.”

I sat across from her.

“What did he almost make you sign?”

Her head snapped upward.

“You saw the paperwork?”

I did not answer.

Eventually, Megan explained.

Pacific Ridge had billed Canyon Crest for procurement and site-logistics consulting.

She could not find evidence that the company had actually provided those services.

The questionable payments she had identified already exceeded two hundred thousand dollars across eight months.

Brandon insisted they were legitimate.

Daniel told her to stop processing anything connected to Pacific Ridge until he could investigate.

Then Brandon demanded something else.

A compliance acknowledgment signed by Megan stating that she had reviewed supporting records for the vendor.

The supporting records did not exist.

“Daniel brought me the form,” Megan said.

“And asked you to sign?”

“Almost.”

She swallowed.

“He started explaining why Brandon needed to believe I had cooperated. Then I refused before he could finish.”

“Why would Daniel even consider it?”

“He wanted time.”

“For what?”

“To investigate Brandon without warning him.”

Daniel apparently suspected Brandon was routing company funds through fake vendors.

The idea seemed insane.

Then Megan explained why Daniel hesitated.

Brandon had been his best friend for twenty years.

They had been college roommates.

Brandon had stood in our wedding.

He was also Canyon Crest’s vice president of operations.

Worse, Daniel’s own name appeared on vendor approvals.

If the invoices were fraudulent, his signatures would require explanation.

Before leaving, I asked Megan not to tell Daniel we had spoken.

She reluctantly agreed.

I needed to hear what my husband would choose to tell me without knowing how much I already knew.

PART 5: THE FRIEND WHO CAME ASKING QUESTIONS

Two days later, Brandon came to our house while Daniel was away.

He behaved casually at first, opening the refrigerator for water as though he had done it hundreds of times.

Then the questions began.

“Daniel seems stressed lately.”

“He does.”

“Has he told you anything?”

“About what?”

“Work.”

I kept my expression neutral.

“Nothing specific.”

Brandon watched me too closely.

Then he asked whether I had met Megan.

I said yes.

“Good kid,” he said. “Young, though. Still learning how business works.”

I waited.

Brandon shrugged.

“Young employees panic about paperwork.”

That sentence did not belong in ordinary conversation.

He realized it too late.

After he left, I locked the door.

Daniel returned around ten.

I told him Brandon had visited.

Daniel stopped immediately.

“What did he want?”

“He asked whether you told me anything about work.”

Daniel’s face lost color.

He demanded to know exactly what Brandon had said.

That was the moment I gave him one final opportunity.

Instead of explaining, Daniel told me:

“If Brandon comes here again, tell me immediately.”

Anger finally overcame caution.

“No.”

He stared.

“What?”

“You do not get to involve me in something dangerous while refusing to tell me what it is.”

Daniel remained silent.

I crossed my arms.

“Is this about Pacific Ridge Advisory?”

Everything stopped.

His expression answered before his mouth did.

“How do you know that name?”

I told him about the folder.

He accused me of searching his briefcase.

I refused to let him redirect the conversation.

Then I told him I had followed him.

I had seen the hotel.

I had spoken with Megan.

Daniel looked stunned.

Finally, I said:

“Tell me everything.”

PART 6: FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS

Daniel sat down.

Then he told me that Brandon had created Pacific Ridge using Elliot Marsh, a relative connected to Brandon’s family, as the registered representative.

The company performed little or no legitimate work.

It existed largely to receive payments from Canyon Crest.

“How much?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Potentially four hundred thousand.”

Megan only knew about half.

Daniel had discovered additional vendors with suspicious characteristics.

He had suspected something for two months and became nearly certain three weeks earlier.

I asked whether he knew invoices were false when he approved them.

“No.”

I made him answer again.

He gave the same answer.

Brandon oversaw vendor setup.

Daniel trusted the internal process and trusted Brandon.

That trust was exactly how the payments passed through normal systems.

Then we discussed Megan.

Daniel admitted he had nearly involved a twenty-six-year-old employee in a deception because he was terrified Brandon would discover the investigation.

“Were you going to forge her signature?”

“No.”

“Submit the document?”

“No.”

“Then what exactly were you planning?”

Daniel looked miserable.

“I honestly don’t know.”

I stared at him.

“That does not make it better.”

“I know.”

He had considered showing Brandon that Megan had cooperated while secretly continuing the investigation.

Even if Daniel never planned to use the false acknowledgment officially, the entire idea was unethical and reckless.

“You almost used a young employee as a shield because you were afraid to confront your friend.”

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

I hated the answer.

I respected that he finally gave it.

Daniel had already contacted an outside attorney because Canyon Crest’s regular counsel was socially close to Brandon.

The outside attorney instructed him to preserve documents, avoid confronting Brandon, delete nothing, and prepare to contact federal investigators.

“When?”

“Monday.”

Anger returned.

“So strangers were going to hear this before your wife?”

Daniel said he wanted to protect me.

I shook my head.

“Protection is not lying until danger reaches our front door.”

When I told him Brandon had already come to the house asking questions, Daniel looked genuinely frightened.
