GLAS Video Moral Stories

“You’ve Been Exhausted Lately. Eat Something Warm.” My Husband Said After Pouring A Clear Liquid Into My Soup. He Thought I Hadn’t Seen Him. I Switched Our Bowls While He Took A Phone Call. Twenty Minutes Later, He Collapsed—And My Sister’s Message Lit Up His Screen: “Is It Finished Yet?”

Part 2 of 3

Preliminary findings showed that a deliberately introduced toxic substance had been present in the food he consumed.

I returned to the police station with my attorney, Rachel Monroe.

Detective Reyes placed a folder on the table.

“Mrs. Prescott, we now have reason to believe your husband’s death was not natural.”

I nodded.

Then I said the sentence I had been preparing throughout the night.

“What if Nathan was never supposed to be the person who consumed it?”

Monica’s expression changed.

I told her about the months of illness.

Nathan’s financial questions.

Brooke’s increasing closeness with him.

The suspicious searches.

Then I opened my phone.

“I installed cameras because I was afraid someone was harming me.”

The detective watched the footage.

Nathan discussing Tuesday.

Brooke talking about my hotels.

The forged documents.

Their affair.

Their expectation that my declining health would support the story they planned to tell after I died.

When the video ended, Monica looked at me differently.

“Your husband and sister were planning your death.”

That was the moment I finally cried.

“My own sister wanted me gone.”

Part 3 — The Sister Who Tried to Escape

Monica immediately requested Brooke’s address, phone number, employment information, and recent travel history.

Less than two hours later, officers located her at Logan International Airport preparing to board an international flight.

She was carrying a fraudulent travel document and approximately $50,000 that had been transferred from one of my company accounts.

The arrest transformed what had initially appeared to be a suspicious domestic death into a much larger investigation.

Nathan was dead.

Brooke was in custody.

But the evidence discovered over the following weeks showed that their plan had been far more deliberate than I first understood.

Investigators recovered modified ownership documents designed to transfer control of my business after my death.

They found attempted beneficiary changes connected to insurance policies and financial accounts.

They discovered that Brooke had gained access to company resources before Nathan died.

Digital records showed months of communication between them.

This had not begun during one impulsive week.

They had built a timeline.

A financial structure.

A public explanation.

A future.

The part that hurt most was how ordinary they had behaved while planning everything.

Brooke had called me on my birthday.

Nathan had brought coffee into my office.

We had shared meals.

They watched my health deteriorate because of what was being done to me, yet both continued behaving as though my illness were simply an unfortunate inconvenience.

Before trial, prosecutor Michael Grant reviewed the evidence with me.

He played the security recording again.

Brooke’s voice filled the conference room.

“Once Elena is gone, we’ll control the hotels.”

Michael paused the video.

“That sentence matters because it establishes financial motive, knowledge, and expectation.”

I stared at the frozen image of my sister.

“She sounds like she’s discussing a merger.”

“That emotional detachment will be difficult for her defense to explain.”

Brooke’s lawyers tried exactly that.

They portrayed Nathan as controlling and manipulative.

They argued that Brooke had become emotionally dependent on him and had been pulled into decisions she would never have made on her own.

The recordings contradicted them.

Brooke asked about timing.

She discussed my assets.

She understood the forged documents.

She repeatedly described the life she expected to have once I was dead.

Nathan may have been deeply involved.

But Brooke was not simply standing beside him.

She was participating.

Part 4 — Recovery Became Its Own Evidence

As the legal case developed, my body slowly recovered.

Once Nathan stopped preparing food for me, the constant nausea faded.

My appetite returned.

My weight stabilized.

My energy came back gradually.

Even my hair began growing normally again.

Every improvement felt like evidence.

For months, I had blamed stress.

I blamed travel.

I wondered whether success itself was making me sick.

The truth was much more disturbing.

Someone inside my own home had turned my trust into access.

My businesses needed restructuring as well.

I changed authorization procedures.

Separated corporate and personal access.

Replaced passwords.

Restricted financial privileges.

Hired independent estate counsel to review every beneficiary designation and ownership document.

My business partner, David Lawson, helped oversee operations while I recovered.

One afternoon, he asked whether I regretted trusting Nathan.

I thought carefully before answering.

“Trusting him was not the mistake. Ignoring myself when the facts stopped matching that trust was the mistake.”

That distinction became important.

Nathan’s questions about insurance had bothered me.

Brooke’s sudden closeness with him had bothered me.

My symptoms worsening after certain meals had bothered me.

I noticed every warning.

Then I created explanations because accepting the alternative would have required acknowledging that two people I loved might want me dead.

Sometimes intuition is not mysterious.

Sometimes it is simply the brain recognizing a pattern before the heart is ready to name it.

Part 5 — The Sentence

Six months after Nathan collapsed in our kitchen, I entered Suffolk County Superior Court for Brooke’s sentencing.

She looked different.

The younger sister who once moved through my home with effortless confidence now sat silently beside her attorneys wearing jail-issued clothing.

The judge reviewed the evidence.

The hidden recordings.

The altered corporate documents.

The unauthorized money.

The airport arrest.

The communications between Brooke and Nathan.

The extended planning.

Then she addressed the courtroom.

“The evidence establishes a sustained financial conspiracy built around the anticipated death of another person. This was neither impulsive nor a momentary lapse in judgment.”

Brooke remained still.

The judge continued.

“The planning extended beyond the intended death itself and included preparation for control of property, insurance proceeds, business interests, and the public explanation afterward.”

Then came the sentence.

Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Brooke turned toward me.

For several seconds, our eyes met.

I expected remorse.

Maybe fear.

Perhaps grief.

Instead, I saw anger.
