I rose slowly.
Adrian looked pleased, apparently expecting me to obey.
Instead, I walked toward the stage and requested the microphone.
I congratulated Eleanor on her birthday.
Then I raised my glass.
“I’d also like to congratulate Adrian, who has repeatedly announced that his future son will inherit the Carter family empire.”
Adrian enthusiastically lifted his glass.
“Naturally. My son will inherit everything I’ve built!”
I smiled at him.
“Then I hope you understand precisely which parts of that empire actually belong to you.”
The applause faded.
Nathan became visibly pale.
Rebecca stared at the emerald bracelet Olivia was wearing, apparently recognizing it as an heirloom that belonged to my grandmother.
I didn’t reveal my investigation that evening.
I wanted the financial audit to proceed without compromising the evidence.
But two days later, Adrian stormed into my office.
“Are you investigating my personal spending behind my back?”
I closed my laptop.
“I’m reviewing unexplained corporate payments, Adrian. That’s part of my responsibility as CFO.”
He slammed his hand onto my desk.
“This company carries my name!”
“And its shares have legally documented owners, regardless of whose surname appears on the building.”
He leaned toward me.
“If you divorce me and damage the company’s valuation, I’ll tell the securities regulators you manipulated our financial statements.”
I stared at him.
“You’re threatening to make false allegations because I discovered suspicious transactions?”
“I’ll do whatever it takes to protect my son’s future.”
After he left, I preserved the recording of our conversation and forwarded it to Melissa.
That afternoon, shareholders controlling fifty-five percent of the voting rights authorized an emergency independent financial examination.
The conflict had moved beyond our marriage.
It now threatened the company itself.
Part 4: Two Hospital Rooms and a Terrible Loss
The strain eventually caught up with me.
That evening, I developed frightening chest tightness and difficulty breathing.
Dad drove me to a hospital in Seattle, where doctors evaluated me and diagnosed a panic attack associated with severe stress.
They recommended rest and follow-up care.
Adrian never visited.
The following afternoon, Brooke appeared carrying a basket of flowers.
She looked around the room before sitting beside my bed.
“Everyone is terribly worried about you, Evelyn. Have you spoken with your father about guaranteeing that four-million-dollar loan?”
I stared at her.
“You came here to ask about financing while I’m recovering in a hospital?”
She shrugged.
“Richard says the company has urgent supplier payments, and your father could help avoid an unnecessary crisis.”
“Tell Richard to speak with the company’s independent advisers. My father won’t guarantee debt simply because your family demands it.”
Brooke left without another word.
The next morning, Olivia was admitted to the same hospital following serious bleeding during her pregnancy.
Despite emergency treatment, she lost the baby.
When I heard, I felt no satisfaction.
Her behavior toward me had been cruel, but the loss of a pregnancy wasn’t something I could celebrate.
Adrian reacted differently.
He stormed into the corridor outside my room, shouting accusations that I had somehow caused the miscarriage.
“You wanted this to happen! You’ve been trying to destroy everything since my birthday announcement!”
Dad stepped between us.
“My daughter has been under medical supervision, Adrian. You have no basis for blaming her for this tragedy.”
Security personnel arrived and escorted Adrian away.
Before leaving, he shouted that our marriage was finished.
I sat against my pillows, staring at the closed door.
He was finally announcing the end of something he’d destroyed months earlier.
Three days later, Rebecca called.
Her voice trembled.
“Evelyn, I found messages on Nathan’s laptop, and I think you need to see them before I confront him.”
We met at a quiet café in Kirkland.
Rebecca opened her computer and showed me messages exchanged between Nathan and Olivia.
One was particularly revealing.
You knew the baby was mine before you went after Adrian. Don’t tell him. My brother can give you the life I can’t afford.
Other messages showed Nathan coaching Olivia on how to approach Adrian, present herself at professional events, and ask for expensive gifts.
He had even suggested the waterfront penthouse.
Rebecca began crying.
“My husband arranged for his own brother to support the woman he was having an affair with, and I treated you terribly without knowing any of this.”
I put my hand over hers.
“You were deceived too, Rebecca. You didn’t invent these lies.”
When she confronted Nathan, he admitted that Olivia had been pregnant before beginning her relationship with Adrian.
Olivia later acknowledged the deception.
Adrian learned the truth and attacked his brother during an argument at the company.
Police intervened, and both men were detained following the disturbance.
Meanwhile, the independent audit revealed the financial structure behind the affair.
The consulting company receiving suspicious payments had been established by Nathan in Nevada.
Its invoices lacked legitimate supporting services.
Corporate funds had been used to pay Nathan’s gambling debts and finance Olivia’s expenses.
Adrian had authorized the transfers.
Richard had pressured directors to overlook irregularities.
For years, the family had treated the company as a private source of money.
Now the paper trail exposed exactly what they’d done.
Part 5: The Apology That Came Too Late

A week later, Adrian asked to meet at the Bellevue mansion.
He looked exhausted.
His eyes were sunken, his beard untrimmed, and his usually impeccable clothing hung loosely from his shoulders.
When I entered the living room, he began crying.
“Olivia lied to me, Nathan betrayed me, and Dad’s businesses are collapsing under debt. I didn’t know any of this would happen.”
He reached toward me.
“Please forgive me, Evelyn. We can begin again, and I promise things will be different.”
I stepped away.
For five years, I’d wanted him to acknowledge how deeply his behavior hurt me.
Now that apology had arrived only after his imagined future collapsed.
“Would you be asking for another chance if Olivia’s child had actually been yours?” I asked.
He lowered his eyes.
“Would you apologize if the company were financially secure and your family hadn’t been exposed?”
He remained silent.
I placed the divorce agreement on the coffee table.
“I’m ending our marriage, Adrian.”
His expression changed almost immediately.
“Then we need a fair division of the house, vehicles, investment accounts, and everything we’ve accumulated.”
I opened the relevant schedule.
