Suddenly, I Understood Why My Husband Had Been Pressuring Me for Months to Sell My $310,000 Condo. I Quietly Contacted an Attorney. And That Was When an Even Bigger Secret Began to Unravel…

Part 2 of 3

Silence settled over the table.

Finally, Gavin answered.

“We’ll work out the details later.”

“Then I won’t be selling anything.”

His expression hardened.

“You’re making this unnecessarily complicated.”

I stood, thanked everyone for their time, and said I needed to return to work.

But I didn’t leave immediately.

From my parked car, I watched Gavin and Tessa walk out together.

He placed his arm around her waist.

Then he kissed her.

I took one photograph.

Strangely, I didn’t cry.

By then, the truth had become impossible to deny.

The Company That Wasn’t Supposed to Exist

That afternoon, Maren helped me review publicly available business records.

We found a company called North Ridge Building Supply LLC.

It had been established three months earlier.

Gavin owned seventy percent.

Tessa owned thirty percent.

My name appeared nowhere.

The company wasn’t an idea waiting for funding.

It already existed.

And the woman my husband planned to leave me for was his business partner.

“He wanted you to provide the money without giving you ownership,” Maren explained.

“So I would be paying for a company they owned together?”

“That’s what the records and messages suggest.”

I stared at the paperwork.

For months, Gavin had told me we were building something for our marriage.

In reality, he was trying to convince me to finance a business that belonged to him and another woman.

That evening, I placed the documents on our kitchen table.

“Gavin, why does Tessa own thirty percent of a company you told me didn’t exist?”

His face changed immediately.

Before he could respond, my phone vibrated.

The message was from Tessa.

Laurel, don’t sign anything. Gavin hasn’t told you about the debt. The company is in serious trouble.

I looked at my husband.

“How much money do you owe?”

He didn’t deny it.

Instead, he asked something that told me everything.

“Who told you about the loans?”

The $135,000 Secret

Gavin finally admitted he had taken out two personal loans to start the company.

He had also borrowed money from his mother.

“I was going to pay everything back once we sold the condo,” he explained.

“Once I sold my condo,” I corrected him.

He began pacing.

“You don’t understand how much pressure I’ve been under.”

“Then explain why you gave Tessa part of the business while expecting me to provide the money.”

He lowered his eyes.

I asked how long they had been involved.

After several moments, he admitted it had been almost a year.

I thought about our anniversary dinner, the weekend trips, and the evenings he told me he was working late.

He had been living two different lives.

“I made a terrible mistake,” he whispered.

“A mistake doesn’t require a year of planning, Gavin.”

He insisted he still loved me.

He promised to end his relationship with Tessa.

Then he asked whether I would reconsider selling the condo.

That was when I understood what mattered most to him.

“If I had already transferred the money, would you still be asking me to stay?”

He said nothing.

I picked up the overnight bag I had packed earlier.

“I’m not selling my condo, Gavin. And I’m speaking to Maren about ending this marriage.”

That night, I stayed with my friend Celeste.

For the first time in months, I slept without wondering what else my husband was hiding.

My Mother-in-Law’s Unexpected Confession

The next morning, Gavin called repeatedly.

I didn’t answer.

Later that afternoon, he appeared at my store carrying white roses.

“Please give me another chance,” he pleaded. “I’ll put the entire business in your name.”

“What about Tessa’s thirty percent?”

He hesitated.

“I’ll figure something out.”

Before I could respond, my employee announced another visitor.

It was Gavin’s mother, Darlene.

She walked into my office looking furious.

“I cannot believe you’re abandoning my son when he needs you most.”

I folded my hands on the desk.

“Your son has been involved with another woman for nearly a year.”

Darlene waved away my explanation.

“Marriage takes forgiveness, Laurel. You’re forty-five years old. You should appreciate having a husband who wants to work things out.”

Her words stung, but I refused to raise my voice.

“My age doesn’t give Gavin the right to spend my savings.”

She turned toward her son.

“After everything you’ve invested, you cannot let her ruin the company!”

I looked at her.

“What exactly has he invested?”

Darlene stopped speaking.

Then she admitted she had lent Gavin $38,000 from her retirement savings.

“He promised to repay me when you sold that condo,” she said.

I felt an unexpected sadness.

Even his mother had expected repayment.

Yet they wanted me to risk the property I had spent twenty years paying for without any written protection.

“Darlene, your son borrowed that money. He is responsible for paying it back.”

She accused me of choosing property over family.

I shook my head.

“I chose my family every day for five years. Gavin chose to make plans without me.”

I asked them both to leave.

For once, neither had anything more to say.

The Other Woman Finally Told Me Everything

The following day, I agreed to meet Tessa at a quiet coffee shop.

She arrived carrying a folder.

“I know you have every reason to dislike me,” she began.

“I’m not here to discuss my feelings. I want the truth.”

She opened the folder.
