Part 2 of 3

The Package at My Apartment

The following morning, I found a package outside my apartment.

Inside was a tiny knitted blanket, a vintage children’s book, and a flash drive.

A card rested on top.

“Somebody should have told you the truth sooner.”

No signature.

I put the flash drive in a drawer.

I wasn’t ready.

Two days later, someone knocked on my door.

Everett stood outside with Piper.

Her wrist was now wrapped in a bright purple brace.

She proudly held up a bakery box.

“We brought cupcakes!”

Everett sighed.

“I attempted to make something myself.”

Piper shook her head seriously.

“They were terrible.”

Despite everything, I laughed.

Everett smiled briefly.

Then his expression grew serious.

“I’m not here because I think cupcakes erase six months.”

“Good.”

“I’m here because I’m finally beginning to understand how badly I handled everything.”

I let them inside.

While Piper investigated the ultrasound picture attached to my refrigerator, Everett placed a small wooden box on my kitchen table.

It was a music box.

Months earlier, I had once told him about a similar one my grandmother owned when I was a child.

“I found this at an antique shop,” he explained. “It was damaged, so I had it restored.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

He hesitated.

“Because lately I’ve been thinking about how easily I gave up on things just because I was afraid they couldn’t be repaired.”

Before I could answer, the intercom sounded.

The front desk attendant spoke through the speaker.

“Dr. Redmond, there’s a Camille Dorsey downstairs asking to see you.”

Everett’s expression immediately changed.

“Camille?”

I looked at him.

“Who is Camille?”

He took a breath.

“Piper’s mother.”

The Woman I Never Expected to Trust

Camille arrived several minutes later.

She was graceful and composed, with dark blond hair and the exhausted eyes of someone who had carried a secret for too long.

She looked directly at me.

“You’re Talia.”

“And you sent the package.”

She nodded.

Everett stared at her.

“What is going on?”

Camille placed her handbag on a chair.

“Your mother.”

His expression hardened.

Camille turned toward me.

“Lenora played a major role in the end of our marriage. I stayed quiet because I thought speaking up would only make things worse. I won’t make that mistake twice.”

She pointed toward the flash drive.

“There are messages and recordings on it. Your attempts to reach Everett didn’t simply disappear.”

I felt suddenly lightheaded.

“What do you mean?”

“His mother made sure they never reached him.”

Everett stared at her.

“That’s impossible.”

“No,” Camille replied. “It’s exactly what she did to me.”

A tight pressure suddenly crossed my abdomen.

I grabbed the edge of the counter.

Everett moved immediately.

“Talia?”

“I’m fine.”

But another wave of discomfort came moments later.

This time, I wasn’t fine.

Everett caught me as my knees weakened.

Camille grabbed her phone.

And within minutes, I was on my way back to the hospital.

The Truth Everett Finally Heard

When I woke, my first thought was my daughter.

My hand immediately moved toward my stomach.

My obstetrician and longtime friend, Dr. Noelle Hart, stood beside the bed.

“She’s okay,” Noelle assured me. “But your blood pressure climbed higher than I’d like. You need rest and as little stress as possible.”

Everett was sitting nearby.

His eyes were red.

Camille stood near the window with her laptop.

When I was stable enough, she opened the files.

The first recording was unmistakable.

Lenora’s voice.

“Talia is pregnant. Everett does not need another complication right now. If she contacts the office, nothing reaches him.”

Everett stared at the computer.

Another recording followed.

“Once enough time passes, she’ll understand there is no place for her here.”

Everett slowly stood.

“She knew.”

I couldn’t answer.

My eyes were already filling with tears.

He turned toward me.

“You really tried to contact me?”

“Three times at your office. More calls than I can remember. I even left a handwritten letter.”

He closed his eyes.

“My mother told me you’d moved on.”

Camille folded her arms.

“She told me similar things years ago. She convinced each of us that the other person had stopped trying.”

Everett looked devastated.

But I needed him to understand something.

“Your mother interfered, Everett. But she didn’t create every problem between us.”

He looked at me.

“I know.”

“You still chose silence.”

He nodded slowly.

“I know that too.”

That mattered more than an excuse would have.

Everett called Lenora from the room.

When she finally answered, he put the call on speaker.

“Did you know Talia was expecting my child?”

Silence.

Then Lenora answered.

“I was trying to protect you.”

Everett’s expression hardened.

“From my own daughter?”

“You were vulnerable. That relationship was moving too quickly.”

“So you decided my life for me?”

“I’m your mother.”

Everett looked toward Piper, who was not in the room but whose photograph filled his phone screen.

Then he looked at my belly.

“And I’m a father. From now on, you do not make decisions about my children, Talia, Camille, or anyone else in my life.”

He ended the call.

Then he came to my bedside.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

I watched him quietly.

“I’m asking you to watch what I do next.”

He Started Showing Up

Noelle placed me on strict rest for the next several weeks.

I hated every minute of it.

I had spent my adult life being useful.

Suddenly, I needed help getting groceries, preparing meals, even remembering when to stop answering hospital emails.

Everett showed up every day.

Not with flowers.

Not with expensive jewelry.

Not with dramatic promises.

He brought groceries.
