Articles of impeachment ‘being filed’ against Donald Trump over his plans to take control of Gaza

Part 2 of 2

Al Green, a representative from Texas, also denounced Trump’s proposal, criticizing both the president and Netanyahu.

“Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke, especially when it emanates from the President of the United States, the most powerful person in the world,” he stated.

“And the prime minister of Israel should be ashamed, knowing the history of his people, to stand there and allow such things to be said.”

Quoting Martin Luther King Jr., Green continued: “Dr. King was right. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, and injustice in Gaza is a threat to justice in the United States of America.”

Green then declared his intent to move forward with impeachment proceedings.

“I rise to announce that the movement to impeach the president has begun. I rise to announce that I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed, and dastardly deeds done.”

He further emphasized that this would be a grassroots effort: “[The] impeachment movement is going to be a grass-up movement, not a top-down. When the people demand it, it will be done.”

What happens next?

Once Green formally introduces articles of impeachment, the House of Representatives will vote on the matter. If a majority supports impeachment, Trump will be officially impeached.

The process would then move to the Senate, where an impeachment trial would be held, overseen by the chief justice of the US Supreme Court. If found guilty, Trump would be removed from office.

However, experts doubt Green’s impeachment effort will gain much traction. Pete Aguilar, the No. 3 House Democrat, told Politico that impeachment is not “an immediate focus of his caucus,” with most Democrats reportedly uninterested in pursuing it at this time.

This is not the first time Green has attempted to impeach Trump—he made multiple efforts during Trump’s first term. Trump was previously impeached in 2019 and again in 2021, making him the first US president in history to be impeached twice.
