I Have Something on My Phone.” Then She Walked Straight Toward Her Father—and What She Played Made His Confident Smile Disappear…

Part 2 of 3

Brielle’s voice was unmistakable.

“Are you sure you’re ready to tell everyone about us?”

Preston laughed.

“Friday will make things easier. Once people see us together, Laurel will understand the marriage is over.”

Then Brielle asked about the money.

“And the transfer? You said the consulting account would be settled before the event.”

Preston replied casually.

“Almost four hundred thousand is already there. Once the paperwork is finished, she’ll have a difficult time claiming any of it.”

My hands began shaking.

The conversation continued.

Preston described our house as something he could leave me while keeping the business and most of the money.

He spoke about our marriage as if it were an inconvenience he needed to resolve.

I listened until the recording ended.

Then I turned off the tablet.

Maisie stood in the doorway.

“Mom, are you mad at me for finding it?”

I immediately shook my head.

“Never, sweetheart. You didn’t do anything wrong.”

I knelt in front of her.

“But I need you to promise me something. From now on, let the adults handle this. You deserve to be a little girl, not someone who has to protect me.”

She nodded, although tears had begun filling her eyes.

That evening, I sent the recordings to Meredith.

She explained that we would need to verify how they had been obtained and whether they could legally be used.

But the financial records already gave us an important starting point.

By Friday afternoon, Meredith had prepared our divorce filing and an urgent request for temporary financial protections.

The court had not yet decided everything.

Still, I finally understood that I had options.

The Woman Wearing My Dress

Friday evening arrived.

I wore a simple midnight-blue gown and pinned my hair back.

Maisie insisted on wearing a soft pink dress with tiny pearl buttons.

Before leaving, I asked her whether she would rather spend the evening with her grandmother.

“No, Mom. I want to be with you.”

We arrived at the hotel shortly after seven.

The ballroom glittered with chandeliers, fresh flowers, and beautifully arranged tables.

I recognized several of Preston’s business partners.

A few greeted me warmly.

Others looked surprised.

“Laurel, I didn’t realize you were coming,” one woman said.

“Neither did my husband,” I replied gently.

Then the music softened as Preston entered through the main doors.

Brielle was beside him.

Her lavender dress shimmered beneath the lights.

I recognized the delicate silver embroidery around the neckline.

I had chosen that gown myself.

Preston stopped when he saw us.

For one brief moment, his confident expression disappeared.

Brielle followed his gaze.

“Preston, who is that?”

He didn’t answer.

Maisie squeezed my hand.

“Mom, that’s your anniversary dress.”

I nodded.

She looked at her father again.

“Why would he give it to someone else?”

I couldn’t find an answer.

But before I could guide her away, Preston began walking toward us.

A Question No One Expected

“Laurel, what are you doing here?” Preston asked quietly.

I looked directly at him.

“Attending a fundraiser. I thought that was what everyone came for.”

Brielle stepped closer.

“Preston, perhaps we should talk somewhere private.”

Maisie looked up at her father.

“Dad, can I ask you something?”

Preston forced a smile.

“Of course, sweetheart.”

“Why is that woman wearing Mom’s dress?”

Several nearby guests turned toward us.

Preston’s expression hardened.

“Maisie, this isn’t an appropriate conversation.”

“But you told Mom you were coming here alone.”

He glanced around nervously.

“Your mother and I will discuss this later.”

I placed a hand on Maisie’s shoulder.

“That’s enough, sweetheart. Come stand beside me.”

But Maisie looked at me with an expression I will never forget.

“Mom, I brought the recording because I thought Dad might tell you it wasn’t true.”

She held out her phone.

I realized she had saved a copy of the message from our shared tablet.

Preston’s face changed.

“What recording?”

I took the phone gently from Maisie.

“One that explains why you have been moving money into Harbor Crest Advisory.”

The nearby conversations stopped.

Brielle took a step backward.

“Preston, what is she talking about?”

He looked from her to me.

“Laurel, don’t do this here.”

I kept my voice steady.

“Then tell me why nearly four hundred thousand dollars went into a company connected to Brielle.”

Preston opened his mouth, but no answer came.

The Recording Heard Across the Ballroom

I hadn’t planned to play the recording publicly.

Meredith had warned me that private messages and financial disputes should be handled carefully.

But Preston suddenly raised his voice.

“You’re making accusations because you’re upset about our marriage. There’s nothing improper about my business.”

Several people were watching now.

One of his senior partners stepped closer.

“Preston, is there a problem with company funds?”

“Absolutely not,” he replied.

I looked at the partner.

“I can’t tell you whether company money was involved. My attorney is reviewing the transactions. But Preston has already acknowledged moving funds into an account I knew nothing about.”

Preston shook his head.

“That’s not what happened.”

Then Brielle spoke.

“Preston, you told me the money was yours.”

The room grew quiet.

Preston turned toward her.

“Brielle, stop talking.”

She stared at him.

“You said the consulting arrangement was legitimate.”

I looked down at the phone in my hand.

“Then perhaps everyone involved should hear what you said yourself.”

I played a short portion of the recording.

Preston’s voice carried clearly through the small speaker.

“Almost four hundred thousand is already there. Once the paperwork is finished, she’ll have a difficult time claiming any of it.”

No one spoke.

I stopped the recording.

There was no need to play anything else.

One of Preston’s partners slowly stepped away.

Another reached for his phone.

Brielle looked at Preston as if she were seeing him for the first time.

“You told me Laurel knew about the arrangement.”

He didn’t answer.

For the first time that evening, Preston seemed to understand that his carefully managed story was falling apart.

The Envelope in My Purse

I reached into my purse and removed a cream-colored envelope.

Inside were copies of the divorce petition, the financial records Meredith had helped organize, and notice of our request for temporary financial restrictions.

I handed the envelope to Preston.

“These are copies of the documents my attorney filed today. You’ll receive formal service through the proper process.”

He opened the first page.

His eyes moved rapidly across the text.

“You’re filing for divorce?”
