Part 2 of 3

Judith began shaking her head. “They are twisting everything.”

“Reduce what?” Ethan demanded.

“You were a difficult baby,” she said. “You cried constantly. Your father worked nights, and I was exhausted.”

The officer warned her to stop speaking, but Ethan stepped closer.

“What did you give me?”

Judith’s gaze moved toward the two small caskets. “I did what was necessary to hold my family together.”

When officers took her by the wrists, she no longer resisted. At the chapel doors, she looked back at Ethan with a strange, private smile.

“Ask your father,” she said.

“My father was lost in a construction accident when I was six.”

Judith tilted her head. “No, Ethan. That is merely what I told you.”

The Man Forty Minutes Away

After Judith was removed, the service could not continue. Guests drifted outside in uneasy groups while Ethan sat in the front pew, staring at nothing.

His father, Samuel Whitmore, had been a shadow throughout our marriage—a handsome young man in one faded photograph, standing beside a pickup truck with a narrow scar above his eyebrow. Judith had said he had been lost when a work site collapsed. There had been no public service, and Ethan, only six at the time, remembered no casket and no official documents.

An officer searched the available records and returned twenty minutes later.

“We found a Samuel Patrick Whitmore with the same birthday and identifying information,” he said. “He lives approximately forty minutes from here.”

He showed Ethan a recent photograph of an older man with gray hair and deep lines around familiar eyes. Ethan’s hands began to tremble.

“That’s him.”

Lily, who had been coloring on the back of a chapel program, looked at the screen.

“I know that man,” she said.

We all turned toward her.

“He came to Grandma’s house when you and Mommy took the babies to the hospital. He was angry because she had bottles in her bag.”

Ethan crouched beside her. “What did he say?”

Lily thought for a moment. “He asked Grandma what she had put in them. Then he said, ‘You promised you would never do this again.’”

The officer began writing.

“Did he take anything?” I asked.

“He took one bottle. Grandma said it had vitamins, but he smelled it and told her she had said she stopped after Daddy.”

Ethan lowered himself onto the pew as if his legs could no longer support him.

Not long afterward, the officer learned that Samuel had been taken to a nearby medical center early that morning after becoming gravely unwell at his home. The timing felt impossible to dismiss.

Then my phone rang.

The number was unfamiliar, but I answered.

“Claire?” a weak male voice asked.

“Yes?”

“This is Samuel.”

Ethan stared at the phone. I placed the call on speaker.

“Dad?”

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

At last Samuel said, “Ethan, I never abandoned you.”

“You lived forty minutes away for more than thirty years.”

“I sent birthday cards, Christmas gifts, and letters every year. Your mother intercepted them. She told everyone I was unstable, falsified reports, and disappeared with you before I could stop her.”

Ethan covered his eyes. “Why didn’t you find me when I grew up?”

“I did. I was the stranger who changed your tire outside the grocery store when you were twenty-two. I attended your college graduation and shook your hand afterward. I made Lily’s wooden rocking horse.”

Lily looked up. “My horse?”

Samuel’s voice softened. “Yes, sweetheart.”

Then he drew an uneven breath.
