Behind Closed Doors Moral Stories

““Call Your Lawyer. Call the Police. Call Whoever You Want.—This House Is Being Sold.” Three Weeks After My Husband Passed Away, My Father Used His Spare Key to Enter My Home, Ordered His Eight-Month-Pregnant Daughter Onto the Porch, and Started Searching His Son-in-law’s Desk—So I Made One Call and Waited

Part 2 of 3

Lucas had installed those numbers himself because the old ones kept falling crooked.

“So he can’t sell it?”

“No.”

One word.

That was all I needed.

Courtney was still talking.

“Once the house sells, your father can get everything organized. You’ll probably want something smaller anyway with the baby—”

“Courtney.”

She stopped.

“The house isn’t being sold.”

She gave me the same patient smile she used whenever she thought I was being difficult.

“Victoria, Charles already explained this.”

“I heard him.”

“Then you understand.”

“No.”

I adjusted my grip on the railing.

“I heard him.”

Her smile disappeared.

Behind her, my father came out of Lucas’s office carrying a dark blue folder.

I recognized it immediately.

He had brought it with him.

It wasn’t one of Lucas’s.

My father opened it on the kitchen island and started flipping through pages.

“Samantha, he has a folder.”

“His folder?”

“Yes.”

“Don’t touch it.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

Then Samantha said something that made me look straight at my father.

“Lucas prepared for this possibility.”

“For my father breaking into my house?”

“Not exactly.”

I heard more typing.

“He was concerned about what might happen if he died before you, especially with Baldwin-Gallagher Logistics.”

That company had started as a partnership between my father and Lucas nine years earlier.

Lucas had supplied the technology, routing systems, and several major clients.

Charles supplied the existing fleet.

They had spent years fighting over control.

I had stayed out of it.

That had been my father’s favorite phrase.

Stay out of it.

“What did Lucas do?”

“He protected your ownership interests. The house. Your investment accounts. And the voting rights connected to Lucas’s stake in Baldwin-Gallagher.”

My father looked toward me.

Our eyes met across the entryway.

He couldn’t hear Samantha.

But something in my face must have bothered him.

He closed the blue folder.

“Who are you talking to?”

I said nothing.

He walked toward the door.

“Victoria.”

I pressed the phone closer to my ear.

Samantha spoke softly.

“Don’t answer him.”

My father stopped just inside the doorway.

“Give me the phone.”

I stayed seated.

For most of my life, that tone had worked.

At sixteen.

At twenty-two.

At my wedding.

Even after I married Lucas.

My father raised his voice, and I usually found a way to make the room peaceful again.

This time I looked down the street instead.

Far away, I could hear a siren.

Then His Phone Rang

My father heard it too.

His jaw tightened.

“You called an ambulance?”

“Yes.”

“For God’s sake.”

Courtney moved closer to him.

“Charles, maybe she really is—”

His phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

I watched his face.

“I have to take this.”

He stepped back into the foyer.

“Charles Baldwin.”

Silence.

Then,

“What?”

Courtney turned toward him.

My father walked farther into the house.

“No. That doesn’t make any sense.”

Samantha heard him through my phone.

“Victoria, stay quiet.”

My father began pacing.

“Who authorized that?”

He listened.

His face had gone pale.

“You cannot freeze operating access without notifying me.”

Courtney’s arms dropped to her sides.

“Charles?”

He waved her away.

“No. I’m telling you, there has been a misunderstanding.”

Samantha spoke.

“That’s enough for me to know what’s happening.”

“What?”

“A temporary hold has been triggered on certain accounts and control rights connected to the estate documents.”

I stared at my father.

“You did that?”

“Not exactly.”

Her voice remained calm.

“Lucas did.”

The ambulance turned onto our street.

Red lights reflected across the windows of our house.

My father was still on the phone.

Then he said the sentence that made Samantha stop typing.

“I did not forge my daughter’s signature on those trust documents.”

Nobody had accused him of that out loud.

Not me.

Not Courtney.

Not while I was listening.

Samantha said one word.

“Good.”

“Good?”

“He just gave us something very important.”

The ambulance stopped at the curb.

Two paramedics stepped out.

My father stood in the foyer holding his phone in one hand and the blue folder in the other.

Courtney wasn’t smiling anymore.

And for the first time since he had walked through my front door with that spare key, my father looked like a man who wasn’t sure what happened next.

I didn’t explain it to him.

I stayed on the porch and waited for the paramedics to come to me.

The Blue Folder Stayed on the Island

One paramedic knelt beside me while the other asked what had happened.

I answered his questions plainly.

Thirty-four weeks.

Water had broken.

Contractions getting closer.

I had fallen onto my knees after being forced out of the house.

When he asked who had done it, I pointed through the doorway.

“My father.”

Charles stepped forward.

“This is a family misunderstanding.”

The paramedic looked at him.

Then at my knees.

“Sir, please stay where you are.”

My father actually stopped.

That almost surprised me more than anything else.

Courtney stood behind him with both hands pressed together.

“Victoria, nobody meant for you to fall.”

I looked at her.

She had been laughing ten minutes earlier.

I didn’t answer.

The paramedics helped me onto the stretcher.

Samantha was still on the phone.

“I’m going to meet you at the hospital as soon as I can. Don’t sign anything Charles gives you. Don’t discuss the company with him.”

“What about the house?”

“It’s yours.”

I closed my eyes for a second.

“You’re sure?”

“I have the recorded deed in front of me.”

My father heard that.

His head snapped toward me.

“Who is that?”

I looked at him.

This time, I answered.

“Samantha Vance.”

His expression changed.

Not dramatically.

His mouth simply closed.

Courtney looked from him to me.

“Who’s Samantha?”

Charles didn’t answer her.

The paramedics lifted the stretcher.

As they carried me toward the ambulance, I could still see through the open front door.

The blue folder sat on the kitchen island.
