Happy Soul Moral Stories

“Dad, Promise You Won’t Get Mad… Mom Keeps Bringing Men Home While You’re Gone. One of Them Sleeps Here.” My 15-Year-Old Daughter Texted Me at 11:43 P.M. While I Was 1,000 Miles Away on Military Duty. I Didn’t Call My Wife—I Said, “Don’t Confront Her.” Six Days Later, a Man Entered My House With Wine and Left at 6:31 A.M. I Saved the Footage. Then I Checked Our Bank Account—and One Charge Made Me Stop Cold.

Part 2 of 3

“Does Mom know?”

“No.”

Another pause.

“What are you going to do?”

Beside me was the folder containing six weeks of documentation.

“What I should’ve been there to do from the beginning. Be your dad.”

The night before my flight, Melissa texted me.

This house feels empty without you.

I read it several times.

Then I typed:

It won’t feel empty much longer.

She sent back a heart.

She had no idea how soon I would be standing in our kitchen.

PART 2 — I CAME HOME EARLY

My flight landed at 6:20 the next morning.

Rick picked me up.

“Want me there when you go home?”

“Not yet.”

Before I went anywhere near the house, we stopped at Rebecca’s office.

She reviewed the paperwork with me one more time. We discussed filing for divorce, the accounts, and what temporary arrangements we could request regarding the children.

Before I left, she repeated one warning.

“Do not turn Valerie into a witness to your confrontation.”

I nodded.

“And don’t tell Mason details he doesn’t need.”

“I won’t.”

“Good. They’re your children, not your jury.”

That sentence stayed with me all the way home.

I waited until Melissa was at work and both kids were at school before entering with my own key.

I had been gone nearly five months.

Our wedding picture still hung in the hallway. There were photographs from our trip to Key West, Mason’s first birthday, and Valerie grinning in her middle-school graduation dress.

Everything looked almost exactly as I remembered it.

I didn’t touch Melissa’s belongings.

I didn’t throw clothes onto the lawn or smash photographs.

I put my suitcase in the guest room.

Then I waited for my children.

At 2:47 p.m., I heard the front door.

“Mom?”

It was Mason.

I stepped into the hallway.

He stopped so quickly his backpack slid from one shoulder.

“DAD!”

The bag hit the floor and he ran straight into me.

I held him until he started laughing.

“You’re crushing me!”

“Deal with it.”

“Mom said you had three more weeks!”

“Surprise.”

Valerie came in behind him.

She didn’t shout.

She simply looked at me, and within seconds her eyes filled.

I opened my arms.

She walked into them.

“I’m here now.”

Her voice was muffled against my shirt.

“Thank you.”

I kissed the top of her head.

“You were never supposed to handle this by yourself.”

For the next hour, we didn’t discuss Melissa.

Mason told me about soccer. Valerie showed me artwork she had been working on. We ordered pizza, and for a little while I let myself pretend I was simply a father who had come home early.

Then I heard Melissa’s car.

The front door opened.

“Kids, I picked up cupcakes because—”

She walked into the kitchen.

The bakery box in her hand tilted.

“Daniel.”

I looked at her.

“Hi, Melissa.”

All the color left her face.

“What are you doing here?”

“I live here.”

“No, I mean… why are you home?”

“They released me early.”

She stared at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I gave her a small smile.

“I wanted to surprise you.”

That word sat between us.

Surprise.

Melissa looked at Valerie.

Then back at me.

She stepped forward as though she intended to hug me.

I stepped back.

That was when she knew.

I told the children to go upstairs. Mason complained, but Valerie put a hand on his shoulder and led him away.

Once they were gone, Melissa folded her arms.

“What is going on?”

I opened my laptop.

The first clip showed Scott arriving at 9:12 p.m.

Melissa stopped breathing normally.

I played another.

Then another.

After that, I placed the hotel charge on the table and turned the photograph toward her.

“Do you want to start with Scott?”

She stared at me.

“Daniel…”

“Or should we start with the other men?”

Her expression hardened.

“You were spying on me?”

I slid the bank statements across the table.

“Five thousand eight hundred dollars.”

She looked down.

“I can explain the money.”

“Good. Explain the resort.”

Silence.

“Explain men staying overnight in our house while our children were upstairs.”

Her jaw tightened.

“I was alone for months.”

I leaned back in my chair.

“Valerie was here.”

Melissa’s eyes snapped toward me.

It lasted less than a second.

But I saw it.

“Valerie told you?”

I didn’t answer.

I didn’t have to.

Melissa shook her head.

“That girl had no business—”

“Careful.”

She stared at me.

“She went through things that were none of her business.”

I stood.

“Do not blame her.”

“She destroyed our family!”

My voice came out quieter than hers.

“Valerie didn’t bring strangers into this house.”

Melissa began crying.

First she insisted Scott was the only serious relationship.

Then she admitted there had been others.

She told me she felt abandoned. She said my career always came first, that she was tired of waiting for deployments and assignments to end, and that after years of being somebody’s wife and somebody’s mother, she wanted to feel wanted again.

I listened.

Some of what she said about our marriage may even have been true.

It did not change what she had chosen to do about it.

When she finished, I put a folder on the kitchen table.

Melissa looked at it.

“What is that?”

“Divorce paperwork.”

Her crying stopped.

She opened the folder.

“You already talked to a lawyer?”

“Yes.”

“Without even talking to me first?”

“You had months to talk to me.”

She pushed the papers away.

“Daniel, we can fix this.”

Before I could answer, I heard movement behind me.

Valerie was standing at the end of the hallway.
