His mother rushed over.

Melissa began pulling drawers open.

They searched the room with growing panic.

I stayed where I was.

I looked into his eyes.

He released me immediately.

The doorbell rang.

Three slow knocks.

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

Daniel’s face turned pale.

Daniel hurried downstairs.

Daniel opened the front door only a few inches.

My mother gripped my wrist.

“Your father’s brother.”

I stared at her.

Dad had always told me his younger brother disappeared after a family dispute twenty years earlier.

Nobody had spoken his name since.

Rachel Kim stepped inside beside him before Daniel could stop her.

“Lucia,” she called.

“Are you upstairs?”

“Yes.”

Footsteps filled the staircase.

Daniel tried to block them.

Thomas pushed past him without raising his voice.

“Move.”

When he entered the bedroom, he looked at my mother for several long seconds.

Neither of them spoke.

Then he walked directly to the wooden headboard.

Instead of searching behind it, he pressed one carved flower near the bottom corner.

A soft click echoed through the room.

The center panel slid open.

Everyone froze.

Inside rested a metal box covered in dust.

Thomas handed it to Rachel.

She opened it carefully.

An old accounting ledger.

My father’s handwritten letter.

Rachel pressed PLAY.

Rachel looked at him.

The House Finally Became Quiet

Police officers filled the house within seconds.

Daniel lunged toward Rachel, trying to snatch the metal box.

He made it only two steps.

Two deputies forced him to the floor.

Neither of them looked at my mother.

Paramedics reached Eleanor moments later.

One of them checked her pulse.

Another examined the medication bottles.

His expression changed immediately.

At Beaufort Regional Medical Center, doctors worked for hours.

Near midnight, one of them finally approached me.

He removed his glasses before speaking.

“Another few days…”

He stopped.

The physician who declared my mother mentally incompetent admitted he had accepted payments to sign false reports.

The forged power of attorney unraveled.

Investigators also discovered the life insurance policy naming Daniel as my sole beneficiary.

Then forensic engineers reopened my father’s fatal crash.

Daniel never looked at me again.
