When He Discovered Who Had Hidden Our Son From Him for Five Years—and Why—His Sister’s Face Turned White

Part 2 of 3

Chapter 5: The Question My Ex-Husband Was Afraid to Ask

Back on the yacht, Grant followed me toward a quiet sitting area.

Oliver had gone downstairs with our trusted babysitter, who had accompanied us on the trip.

“Brielle, please wait.”

I stopped.

Grant looked toward the staircase where Oliver had disappeared.

“How old is he?”

“Five.”

He swallowed.

“Is he mine?”

I held his gaze.

“Yes, Grant. Oliver is your son.”

He slowly lowered himself into a chair.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

For a moment, I couldn’t believe what I’d heard.

Then I opened my laptop.

“I did tell you. Twenty-seven times.”

I showed him copies of the emails, registered letters, and delivery confirmations.

One letter included my pregnancy test.

Another contained the ultrasound photograph.

The last included a picture of newborn Oliver sleeping in a blue blanket.

Grant stared at the documents.

“I never saw any of these.”

“I know that now.”

He looked confused.

“What do you mean?”

I opened another file.

“Someone redirected my emails, intercepted my letters, and made certain you never learned about your son.”

Behind us, a familiar voice interrupted.

“You can’t possibly believe this nonsense, Grant.”

Meredith stood in the doorway.

I turned my laptop toward her.

“Would you like to explain why your company paid the people responsible?”

Her face lost its color.

Chapter 6: The Evidence Hidden for Six Years

Grant looked between us.

“Meredith, what is she talking about?”

His sister forced a laugh.

“She’s a computer consultant. She can make anything look convincing.”

I opened the original transaction records.

“These aren’t documents I created. They’re archived financial records from your own systems.”

The first payment went to the photographer who had followed me to the hotel.

The second went to an employee at Dr. Bennett’s medical office.

That employee had provided confidential appointment details.

The third payment went to a technology administrator who had access to Grant’s email system.

I explained that the photographs of me entering the hotel were genuine.

The accusation attached to them was not.

Dr. Bennett had been attending a medical conference there, and I’d met him briefly to discuss my treatment.

The emails suggesting a secret relationship had been fabricated.

Grant rubbed his forehead.

“You told me that night.”

“I did.”

“And I didn’t believe you.”

I didn’t answer.

There was nothing useful I could add.

Meredith stepped forward.

“Grant, she’s trying to turn you against your own family.”

He looked at her.

“Did you know she was pregnant?”

Meredith hesitated.

It was only a second, but I saw him notice.

“Answer me.”

Before she could respond, Douglas entered the room.

“Everyone involved needs to come into the conference lounge. The board’s legal representatives are ready.”

Meredith immediately protested.

“This is a private family matter.”

Douglas shook his head.

“Not anymore.”

Chapter 7: Forty-Eight Million Dollars and One Family Secret

The conference lounge overlooked Newport Harbor.

Only the company’s board members, legal advisers, and directly involved family representatives remained.

I connected my laptop to the large display.

For forty minutes, I explained the financial records.

Payments had been approved through companies Meredith controlled.

Several contracts were duplicates.

Others described services that had never been provided.

The questionable transfers totaled approximately $48 million.

Douglas explained that the findings had already been referred to the appropriate authorities.

Meredith was being removed from her management responsibilities while the investigation continued.

“You’re making a terrible mistake,” she told him.

Douglas remained calm.

“The records will determine what happens next.”

Then I displayed the older payments connected to my divorce.

Grant leaned forward.

“Why would she spend money to end my marriage?”

I opened the final document.

It was a copy of his grandfather’s trust agreement.

Under its terms, a substantial block of family shares was reserved for Grant’s first child.

Until that child existed, Meredith retained temporary administrative authority over those shares.

Once a qualifying beneficiary was identified, her control would become subject to additional oversight.

Oliver’s existence changed everything.

As his mother and legal representative, I could have requested information about the trust.

That meant someone might have examined the financial records years earlier.

I looked at Grant.

“Your sister wasn’t afraid of losing you. She was afraid of losing control.”

The room became completely silent.

Chapter 8: The Sister Who Thought She Owned Everything

Meredith stared at the screen.

Then she turned toward Grant.

“You have no idea how much I’ve sacrificed for this family.”

He didn’t move.

“Tell me you didn’t do this.”

“I spent twenty years managing responsibilities you barely understood,” she replied. “While you traveled and enjoyed your life, I was protecting everything Grandfather built.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

Her voice grew sharper.

“Brielle would have interfered with every decision. She would have demanded access to records she knew nothing about.”

I remained seated.

Grant looked at her with an expression I’d never seen before.
