Part 2 of 3

Medical supplies intended for smaller clinics had repeatedly been recorded as damaged or undelivered.

Yet the corresponding financial transactions suggested that money had been redirected elsewhere.

“Vivienne believed someone inside the organization was manipulating the records,” Beatrice explained.

Adrian looked stunned.

“She asked me about those accounts three days before the incident.”

“What did you tell her?” I asked.

He looked away.

“I told her the finance department would handle it.”

A painful silence followed.

“She wanted me to listen,” he continued. “And I was too busy to understand how worried she was.”

Beatrice placed a security photograph on the table.

It showed Vivienne standing outside an old transportation office beside a man wearing a company jacket.

The man’s face was partly obscured.

But the employee records identified him.

Colin Prescott.

My brother had met Vivienne the day before she passed away.

The Phone Call My Brother Had Been Afraid to Make

That evening, my phone rang from an unfamiliar number.

“Natalie?”

I recognized Colin immediately.

“Where have you been? Mom has been worried sick.”

“I’m okay for now. Please listen carefully.”

His voice sounded exhausted.

He explained that Vivienne had contacted him because he previously worked with the company’s delivery records.

She suspected that shipments had been deliberately misclassified to conceal unauthorized financial transfers.

“She needed someone who understood the old routes,” Colin said.

“Why didn’t she tell Adrian?”

“She wanted proof before bringing him into it. She was afraid the person responsible was someone he trusted.”

I looked toward Adrian, who was standing beside Oliver’s crib.

“What about the fifty thousand dollars?”

Colin sighed.

“I took it without permission to pay a former driver named Franklin Mercer. He had copies of the original shipping logs.”

“Colin, you should have gone to the authorities.”

“I know. I thought I could solve everything before anyone found out.”

Then he said something that made my knees weak.

“Natalie, Vivienne knew about Dad.”

Our father, Walter Prescott, had passed away when I was a little girl.

My mother had always described his passing as a workplace accident.

“What does Dad have to do with this?”

Colin’s voice softened.

“He discovered the same accounting pattern more than twenty years ago. Someone used his name to cover it up.”

Before I could ask another question, Colin told me he had left evidence in a secure location.

Then the call ended.

The Secret That Began Twenty-Two Years Earlier

Adrian immediately asked Beatrice to investigate my father’s employment history.

The documents revealed that Walter Prescott had worked for a medical distribution company that supplied charitable clinics throughout Massachusetts.

He had discovered that shipments were being redirected and reported the discrepancies to management.

Shortly afterward, he passed away in an accident.

Several documents later appeared suggesting he had authorized questionable transactions.

But Vivienne had found inconsistencies in those signatures.

She believed my father had been blamed for something he had tried to prevent.

There was another discovery.

Years earlier, Vivienne had quietly arranged financial assistance for my family through a charitable program.

My mother had received help with medical expenses without knowing who had made it possible.

I sat beside Oliver’s crib, struggling to understand.

“She knew about us all this time?”

Beatrice nodded.

“Vivienne believed your father deserved to have his reputation restored.”

Adrian placed a hand on the back of my chair.

“My wife was trying to help your family while protecting ours.”

I looked at him.

“Then we have to finish what she started.”

The People Who Had Been Trusted for Too Long

As the investigation continued, two names appeared repeatedly.

The first was Graham Whitcomb, a longtime financial adviser who had worked with Adrian’s father.

The second was Dr. Everett Sloane, the hospital’s chief administrator.

Together, they had access to charitable financial records, medical assistance programs, and transportation contracts.

Beatrice discovered that someone had recently used Colin’s old employee credentials to access archived company files.

Those credentials had been inactive for almost two years.

“Someone reactivated his account,” she explained.

Adrian frowned.

“Who authorized it?”

“The request came through Graham’s department.”

We realized Colin might be taking the blame for transactions he had never approved.

Adrian wanted to confront Graham immediately.

I stopped him.

“We need evidence that can stand up to an investigation, not another argument.”

He looked at me for a long moment.

“You sound like Vivienne.”

I wasn’t sure what to say.

He continued quietly.

“She always told me that having power meant nothing if I refused to listen.”

For the first time, Adrian agreed to let outside investigators examine the company’s records.

He understood that protecting his reputation could no longer come before protecting his son.

The Envelope Hidden in the Hospital Archive

The next discovery came from an unexpected place.

Beatrice learned that original financial documents had been stored in the hospital’s charitable-care archive.

We requested their preservation through the proper legal channels.

Dr. Sloane refused access, claiming the records were under administrative review.

But when he appeared carrying a document case, Beatrice noticed an envelope bearing Vivienne’s initials.

With investigators already involved, the case and its contents were secured for examination.

Inside were copies of financial transfers, an encrypted drive, and a recording.

The recording was from Colin.

His voice filled the room.

“Natalie, if you’re hearing this, I want you to know Dad never approved those transfers.”

I covered my mouth.

“His signature was copied from an old report. He was trying to expose the missing funds, not take them.”

Colin continued.

“Dr. Sloane ordered the recent transfers. Graham helped conceal them. Vivienne discovered the records and asked me to find the missing shipping logs.”

Adrian stood motionless.

The recording ended with one final sentence.

“Please tell Mom that Dad was an honest man.”

I couldn’t hold back my tears.

For years, my family had lived with unanswered questions.

Now the truth was finally beginning to emerge.

The Truth About Vivienne’s Final Journey

Investigators obtained authorization to search an old company terminal near the Boston waterfront.

There, they found Graham Whitcomb preparing to remove several boxes of archived documents.
