I Came Home Early on My Son’s First Birthday and Found My Wife Washing Dishes While Holding Our Feverish Baby for Twenty Relatives—Then My Cousin Tried to Walk Away With a Hidden Folder That Changed Everything

Part 2 of 3

She looked thinner than she had that morning.

Her hair was damp around her face.

Her hands were red from the warm water.

Jasper’s cheeks were flushed, and his breathing was faster than normal.

For several seconds, I could not speak.

Camille looked up.

The moment she saw me, her face changed.

Not with relief.

With fear.

“Reid?”

She quickly stood, almost losing her balance.

“You weren’t supposed to be home yet.”

I crossed the room and took the pot from her hand.

“Why are you doing this?”

Her eyes moved toward the backyard.

“Your mother said the guests needed everything cleaned before coffee.”

I touched Jasper’s forehead.

He was far too warm.

“How long has he been like this?”

“Since late morning.”

“Why didn’t you call me?”

Camille looked down.

“I tried.”

She pointed toward the counter.

Her phone was there, but the screen was dark.

“Your mother took it away. She said I was trying to ruin the party.”

I felt something inside me become very still.

Not loud.

Not reckless.

Just clear.

What Camille Had Been Hiding

I picked up her phone and handed it back to her.

“Get your bag.”

She stared at me.

“What?”

“We’re leaving now.”

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

“She will be furious.”

That was when I understood how serious the situation had become.

Camille was afraid of my mother inside her own home.

I gently took Jasper from her arms.

“Camille, look at me.”

She raised her eyes.

“You do not have to ask anyone for permission to care for our son.”

Tears gathered in her eyes.

“I didn’t want to create problems between you and your family.”

“You are my family.”

She closed her eyes for a moment, as though she had been waiting a long time to hear those words.

While she collected the diaper bag, I noticed a small bruise-colored mark on her wrist.

I did not ask about it then.

Jasper needed help first.

But I remembered it.

The Celebration Ends

We left through the side door.

I secured Jasper in his car seat and helped Camille into the passenger seat.

Then I called for medical assistance.

I explained that my one-year-old son had a high temperature and was breathing too quickly.

I also explained that a large gathering was taking place in my home without my permission and that my wife had been prevented from contacting me.

Within minutes, an ambulance arrived.

A second vehicle carrying local officers followed.

The music stopped almost immediately.

My mother came out through the back door, still holding a drink.

“What is all this?” she demanded.

One of the officers asked who owned the property.

My mother lifted her chin.

“I do.”

I stepped forward.

“No, you don’t.”

She turned toward me.

For the first time that day, her confidence disappeared.

“Reid, you’re home early.”

“Yes.”

She glanced toward Camille in the car.

“She has filled your head with nonsense.”

“I saw everything myself.”

My mother moved closer and lowered her voice.

“Do not embarrass me in front of the family.”

“You embarrassed yourself when you treated my wife like she had no place in her own home.”

The Folder Beneath the Jacket

As the officers asked guests to gather their belongings, I noticed my cousin Vaughn moving toward the front gate.

He wore a heavy jacket despite the warm weather.

One side of it bulged awkwardly.

When an officer asked him to stop, he pretended not to hear.

Then several papers slipped from beneath the jacket.

My mother went pale.

The officer picked them up.

Among the papers was the original deed to my house.

There were also copies of my identification, financial statements, and several unsigned legal forms.

One document listed my mother as the future owner of the property.

Another described Camille as mentally unable to manage household decisions.

I stared at the pages, unable to understand what I was seeing.

“Where did you get these?” I asked Vaughn.

He looked at my mother.

She answered for him.

“I was protecting the family.”

“From what?”

“From her.”

She pointed toward Camille.

“That woman has controlled you since the day you married her.”

I almost laughed at the absurdity of it.

Camille had barely been allowed to choose what she ate.

Yet my mother was calling her controlling.
