Part 2 of 3

I touched Bennett’s forehead.

He was burning with fever.

When I lifted him, he barely moved.

My hands began shaking.

“Mom! Mallory! Get in here!”

They hurried into the doorway.

Patricia looked at the bed and frowned.

“She was fine yesterday. She probably just needs more rest.”

Mallory folded her arms.

“She’s been acting exhausted all week. We told her she needed to stop making everything so difficult.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“My wife isn’t waking up, and my newborn son has a fever. How can you stand there talking like this is normal?”

Neither answered.

I called for emergency assistance while wrapping Bennett in a clean blanket.

Our neighbor, Mr. Hollis, heard me outside and rushed over to help.

Within minutes, we were on our way to the hospital.

I held Bennett close and kept whispering his name.

“Stay with me, little buddy. Daddy’s here now.”

For the first time in my life, I was truly afraid of what the next few minutes might bring.

The Doctor’s Five Words Changed Everything

The emergency department staff took one look at Amelia and Bennett and immediately brought them inside for treatment.

A nurse carried my son toward the pediatric examination area while another team helped Amelia onto a hospital bed.

I stood between the two rooms, feeling completely helpless.

A physician named Dr. Evelyn Brooks approached me.

“How old is your son?”

“Seven days.”

“And how long has your wife been feeling unwell?”

I swallowed.

“I don’t know exactly. I was away for work. My mother and sister were staying with them.”

Dr. Brooks looked toward the examination room.

Then she asked a question that made my stomach tighten.

“Who was responsible for making sure they received food, water, medication, and medical attention while you were gone?”

“My mother and sister,” I answered.

She exchanged a serious look with the nurse beside her.

Then she said five words I will never forget.

“Call the police right now.”

I stared at her.

“Police? Doctor, what’s happening?”

She spoke carefully.

“Your wife is showing signs of severe dehydration and a serious infection. Your son’s fever is especially concerning because he’s only a week old. We need to understand why neither received medical attention sooner.”

I felt the room spinning.

My mother had told me everything was fine.

My sister had insisted Amelia was exaggerating.

And now both my wife and son needed urgent treatment.

I leaned against the wall, struggling to breathe normally.

“Please tell me they’re going to be okay.”

Dr. Brooks rested a hand on my shoulder.

“We’re doing everything we can for them. Bringing them here was the right decision.”

I wanted to believe her.

But one question kept repeating in my mind.

What had happened inside my house while I was gone?

The Messages My Sister Never Expected Anyone to Read

My mother and Mallory arrived at the hospital shortly afterward.

Patricia immediately began explaining herself.

“Amelia was emotional all week. I kept telling her she needed to rest, but she wouldn’t listen.”

Mallory nodded.

“We did everything we could. She kept saying she felt terrible, but we thought she was just overwhelmed.”

Dr. Brooks listened quietly.

Then she asked whether they had seen the discharge instructions from the hospital.

I retrieved the folded papers from Bennett’s diaper bag.

The warnings I had highlighted were still visible.

Fever.

Severe weakness.

Difficulty staying hydrated.

Symptoms requiring prompt medical attention.

I held the papers in front of my mother.

“I showed you these before I left. You promised me you understood.”

Patricia looked away.

“I didn’t think it was that serious.”

Before I could respond, a notification appeared on Mallory’s phone.

She glanced at the screen and immediately turned it facedown.

An officer who had arrived to speak with us noticed her reaction.

He began asking questions about the days leading up to my return.

Eventually, investigators obtained and reviewed relevant messages from Mallory’s phone.

What they discovered changed everything.

Amelia had repeatedly asked for water, food, and help caring for Bennett.

Mallory had complained to our mother about the baby’s crying.

One message from Patricia said:

“Let him cry for a while. She wanted to be a mother.”

Another read:

“Don’t call Trevor. He’ll just take Amelia’s side.”

But the message that hurt me most had been sent the evening before I came home.

Mallory had written:

“Mom, Amelia looks really bad. She says she feels dizzy and can’t get up properly. Should we call someone?”

Patricia’s reply was short.

“She’s acting. Leave her alone.”

I read those words several times.

My wife had asked for help.

My mother knew she wasn’t feeling well.

And instead of calling me or seeking medical advice, she had decided Amelia was pretending.

I looked at Patricia.

“She told you she couldn’t get up?”

My mother began crying.

“Trevor, I didn’t know it was going to get this serious.”

“But you knew she was asking for help.”

She didn’t answer.

Mallory finally spoke.

“Mom kept saying Amelia was trying to make us look bad. She told me not to call you because you’d blame us.”

Patricia turned toward her.

“Mallory, that’s not fair!”

My sister shook her head.

“You told me not to call him. You know you did.”

I stood there listening to them argue while my wife and son were being treated in separate rooms.

Something inside me changed.

For years, I had defended my mother whenever Amelia said she felt uncomfortable around her.

I had always assumed Patricia’s intentions were good.
