Part 2 of 3

At 6:19, he sent me a text.

Security may have questions for you. Don’t make a scene.

A second message followed.

Maybe now you’ll understand who’s in charge.

I forwarded both messages to Ortega and my attorney.

I wasn’t at the airport.

I was sitting in Melissa’s kitchen, holding a cup of coffee I hadn’t touched.

She’d known me since college, long before Preston entered my life.

“Harper, you need to tell me something,” she said quietly. “Has he ever done anything like this before?”

I shook my head.

“Not like this.”

“But he’s frightened you before.”

I stared at the coffee.

“He’s made me feel like I couldn’t trust my own judgment. I kept thinking if I explained things calmly enough, he’d eventually listen.”

Melissa reached across the table.

“And now?”

I looked at Preston’s message.

“Now I think he knew exactly what he was doing.”

By midmorning, my attorney had arranged for me to participate remotely in the Chicago meeting.

The financial review would continue.

Preston’s attempt to stop it had failed.

And when Ortega called later that morning, he told me investigators had requested interviews with both Preston and Lorraine.

“They’re going to know you reported this,” he warned.

“I assumed they would.”

“Do you have somewhere safe to stay?”

“Yes.”

I ended the call and opened my laptop.

On the screen was the financial report my husband had spent months trying to keep me from examining.

For seven years, he’d insisted I leave the important decisions to him.

That morning, I made one of my own.

I instructed my attorney to seek an emergency board meeting and present the evidence supporting Preston’s removal from operational authority while the investigation continued.

I didn’t know whether the board would agree.

But I was finished asking my husband for permission to protect my father’s company.

PART 2 — THE WOMAN THEY NEVER TOOK SERIOUSLY

The Meeting Preston Tried to Stop

Three days later, I attended the emergency board meeting with my attorney, Claire Bennett, and the independent accounting report.

Preston was there.

He wore the charcoal suit I’d bought him for our fifth anniversary and greeted the directors as though nothing unusual had happened.

When I entered, he glanced at Claire.

“Harper, bringing a lawyer into a family business meeting isn’t going to help anyone.”

“This is a corporate board meeting, Preston.”

“You know what I mean.”

I took my seat.

Lorraine wasn’t present. She’d been placed on administrative leave after the board learned about the police investigation.

Preston had already told several directors that I was emotionally overwhelmed and acting out of resentment.

He hadn’t mentioned the suitcase.

Claire began with the financial findings.

She explained the questionable transfers, the missing supporting documents, and the consulting companies whose ownership required further investigation.

We didn’t claim every payment was fraudulent. We presented the transactions we could document and identified the records still needed.

Preston interrupted repeatedly.

“Those were legitimate consulting expenses.”

One director, Mr. Ellis, looked at him.

“Then why haven’t we received the contracts?”

“Because this ridiculous investigation has disrupted the entire finance department.”

“We requested them before the investigation began,” I said.

Preston turned toward me.

“Harper, please. You’re making yourself look foolish.”

The room went quiet.

For years, that sentence had been enough to silence me.

This time, I looked at the other directors.

“I have no objection to anyone questioning my findings. But I’d appreciate it if we discussed the records rather than my character.”

Claire continued.

She also informed the board that a separate criminal investigation concerned an attempt to interfere with my scheduled travel.

She gave only the details appropriate to disclose at that stage.

Preston’s face changed.

“You’re seriously bringing our personal problems into this?”

Mr. Ellis leaned forward.

“Preston, if someone attempted to interfere with a shareholder’s participation in company affairs, that’s relevant to this board.”

“These are allegations.”

“Then they’ll be investigated.”

After nearly two hours, the board voted to place Preston on administrative leave, remove his access to company funds and records, and appoint an interim executive.

I abstained from the vote on the advice of counsel.

The decision wasn’t a dramatic victory.

There was no applause, no shouting, and no grand speech.

But when Preston left the conference room, he no longer had the authority to decide which company documents I could see.

That was enough for one day.

What Lorraine Finally Admitted

The criminal investigation moved more slowly than I expected.

Ortega couldn’t tell me everything investigators were doing, and I learned to stop checking my phone every ten minutes.

But the evidence continued to develop.

The firearm recovered from my suitcase was traced to Preston. Investigators reviewed the recording, the communications between him and Lorraine, and the false report made that morning.

Both retained attorneys.

For several weeks, neither spoke publicly about what happened.

Then Lorraine agreed to provide a statement as part of negotiations with prosecutors.

I wasn’t present for her interview, but I later learned the substance of her account through the legal proceedings.

She acknowledged placing the firearm in my bag.

She said Preston had suggested the plan after learning that my attorneys intended to present the financial findings.

According to Lorraine, they believed a public incident at the airport would damage my credibility and put pressure on me to accept the share-purchase agreement.

What disturbed me most wasn’t her admission about the suitcase.

It was her explanation of why she believed she was entitled to help Preston take control of the company.

Lorraine’s late husband had worked for my father for nearly twenty years.

She believed their family had never received the recognition or financial rewards they deserved.

After Dad passed away, Preston’s appointment as CEO seemed to her like an opportunity to correct that perceived injustice.

But my majority ownership stood in the way.

For years, she’d convinced herself that Preston was the person who truly deserved the business.

I was merely the daughter who’d inherited it.

When my attorney told me this, I sat quietly for several minutes.

“So she never thought I had a right to make decisions?”

Claire closed the file.

“She appears to have believed your ownership was an obstacle to what her family deserved.”

“And Preston?”

“The evidence suggests he shared that belief. But we should let the proceedings establish his responsibility.”

I thought about the first time Lorraine had called me a decorative shareholder.

I’d assumed she was being unkind.

Now I understood that she’d been telling me what she genuinely believed.

The Marriage I Thought I Had

The financial investigation uncovered something even harder to accept.

Several of the consulting companies receiving Lawson Holdings payments were connected to people Preston had known for years.

As investigators obtained additional records, the amount of questionable spending increased substantially.

The final accounting would take months.

But it became clear that Preston had used his position to authorize payments that benefited himself and his associates.

I remembered how often he’d told me the company couldn’t afford improvements to older properties.

He’d canceled employee training programs, postponed repairs, and eliminated positions my father had considered essential.

Whenever I questioned those decisions, Preston blamed rising costs.

Now I had to consider how much of the financial pressure had resulted from his own actions.

I also began looking differently at our marriage.

When Preston proposed, I’d believed he loved my sense of humor, my independence, and the fact that I didn’t need him to support me.

He used to tell friends I was the smartest woman he’d ever met.

Somewhere along the way, that admiration had turned into resentment.

Or perhaps it had never been quite what I thought.

I didn’t know.

And I stopped pretending I could find an answer that would make seven years of deception easier to accept.

One evening, Melissa found me sitting on her back porch with my wedding ring in my palm.

“You don’t have to decide everything tonight,” she said.

“I keep thinking about the day we got married.”

She sat beside me.

“What about it?”

“My father was so happy. He told Preston to take care of me.”

Melissa waited.

“I wonder what Dad would think if he knew what happened.”

“I think he’d want you to take care of yourself.”

I closed my fingers around the ring.

The following morning, I instructed Claire to begin divorce proceedings.

I also arranged for my personal financial accounts and property interests to be reviewed and protected through lawful channels.

There was no satisfaction in making those calls.

I had once expected to grow old with Preston.
