If Prince George Has To Take The Throne Before 18, This Royal Will Likely Be Regent According To Order Of Succession

Part 2 of 2

“This picture is so beautiful, he is growing up so fast! I wish the happiest birthday to Prince George. Have the best day!”

Currently second in line to the British throne, Prince George follows his father, Prince William, in the order of succession.

His 11th birthday arrived amid a challenging time for the royal family, following the cancer diagnoses of both his grandfather, King Charles III, and his mother, Catherine, the Princess of Wales. In March 2024, Catherine revealed her diagnosis through an emotional video, just a month after the royal family’s official page announced Charles’s condition. The statement read:

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

With these circumstances, discussions about the line of succession have resurfaced, particularly regarding what would happen if Prince George were to inherit the throne before reaching adulthood. Fortunately, The Regency Act of 1937 provides a clear structure for such situations. Under this act, a regent would be appointed to rule on behalf of the underage monarch, ensuring stability until the successor reaches the required age.

If Prince George were to ascend to the throne before turning 18, the regency would likely fall to his uncle, Prince Harry. While his younger siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, are next in line, their status as minors renders them ineligible for the role. Prince Harry, being next in succession after them and meeting the age requirement, would be a strong candidate for the position. His familiarity with royal duties further strengthens his suitability for the responsibility.

Even at a young age, Prince George is being gradually introduced to his future royal responsibilities while still enjoying a balanced childhood. Designer Amaia Arrieta, who has worked with the young royals, shared insights into his early awareness of his role, stating:

“I think George has known almost from the beginning. He has always had a more prominent role. There have been many events with his late great-grandmother or great-grandfather when it was just him, and his siblings weren’t there.”

As he grows, Prince George continues to navigate the unique path set before him, embracing both his responsibilities and his youth, all while the world watches with anticipation.
