Happy Soul Moral Stories

“Just Sign It, Nora. I’ve Wasted Enough Time on This Marriage, Someone’s Waiting for Me,” My Husband Said, Shoving Our Divorce Papers Toward Me Before Rushing Off to Pick Up His High School Sweetheart. I Didn’t Beg Him to Stay. I Signed, Slipped the White Hospital Envelope Back Into My Purse, and Disappeared From His Life. Nine Years Later, He Was Handing a Science Award to My Son When He Suddenly Looked at the Boy’s Face, Then Across the Auditorium at Me, and Whispered, “Nora… How Old Is He?”

Part 2 of 3

“Nora, I didn’t know.”

“No. You didn’t.”

“If you had told me—”

“What would you have done?”

His mouth opened, but he did not answer.

For the first time since he approached me, the anger left his face.

He looked across the auditorium at Mason.

“I want to speak to him.”

“Not today.”

His eyes came back to mine. “Nora, I’m his father.”

“Biologically. He learned that fact about five minutes before you did.”

“You can’t expect me to just walk away.”

“And you can’t expect a nine-year-old boy to absorb a father between an award ceremony and dinner.”

That stopped him.

I told Lucas that if he genuinely wanted contact, he could speak with a family therapist and communicate with me properly. I would not punish Mason by hiding the truth forever, but I would not let Lucas’s shock determine the speed of my son’s life.

Lucas nodded slowly.

Then he asked the question I had been dreading.

“Does Mason know who I am?”

“Not yet.”

I found Mason near the stage and took him home.

That evening, he barely touched dinner.

Finally, he put down his fork.

“Mr. Albright is my father, isn’t he?”

There was no point insulting him with a lie.

“Yes.”

He stared at the table for a while.

“Did he know about me?”

“No.”

Mason’s next question was quieter.

“Did you not tell him?”

I told him the simplest version I could: Lucas and I were divorcing when I discovered the pregnancy; I had intended to tell him; I had made a different decision after our final conversation.

Mason listened without interrupting.

Then he looked directly at me.

“So did Dad leave me, or did you keep me from him?”

Before I could answer, the doorbell rang.

It was after nine.

I checked the peephole.

Lucas was standing outside.

Beside him was Alyssa.

And in her hands was a thick beige folder.

PART 2 — WHAT HAPPENED AFTER I SIGNED

I stepped into the hallway and pulled the apartment door nearly closed behind me.

“You have two minutes.”

Lucas looked uncomfortable enough that I knew arriving unannounced had not been his idea.

Alyssa held the beige folder against her chest.

“It was mine,” she said. “I asked him to bring me.”

Seeing her after nearly a decade produced less jealousy than I would have expected. Mostly, I felt tired.

“Why?”

She opened the folder.

Inside were old emails, printed messages, and financial records.

“Because Lucas called me after the ceremony and told me about Mason. Before he starts rewriting the past because he feels guilty, I think you should know what actually happened after your divorce.”

Lucas flinched.

That sentence was the first reason I let her continue.

Alyssa explained that she had returned from London because her father was seriously ill and the family business was unstable. Lucas had assumed her return meant something romantic. She admitted she had leaned on him too heavily and enjoyed having someone familiar solve problems for her.

“But I didn’t come back to restart our relationship,” she said.

She handed me an email dated three weeks after my divorce.

I read it twice.

Alyssa had written to Lucas that whatever they had shared in high school was over and that he should not have dismantled his marriage around the possibility of getting it back.

I looked at Lucas.

“You left our marriage for a woman who hadn’t even agreed to be with you?”

His jaw tightened. “Yes.”

There was no excuse attached to it.

Oddly, that made the answer worse.

Alyssa removed another document. It was a receipt from a private investigation firm dated six months after the divorce.

The payment was from Lucas.

“What is this?”

Lucas answered this time.

“I hired someone to find you.”

I almost laughed.

“Six months later?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked directly at me. “At first? Because Alyssa rejected me, and I realized I’d blown up my life for something that existed mostly in my head.”

Alyssa said nothing.

Lucas continued. “Later, it wasn’t about Alyssa. I missed you. I went back to the house. Your office told me you’d resigned. The investigator found that you’d relocated, but he also said you’d taken steps to keep your information private.”

“And you stopped.”

“Yes.”

“You had my parents’ names. You had an attorney. You had ways to send a letter.”

His shoulders lowered.

“I know.”

For years I had privately imagined Lucas discovering he had made a mistake and searching desperately for me. Apparently, part of that fantasy had happened.

The truth was less romantic.

He had looked.

Then it became difficult, and he stopped.

Behind me, the apartment door opened.

Mason stood there.

“I can hear you talking about me.”

I turned. “Mason—”

“Can we please do this inside?”

So we did.

Alyssa stayed only long enough to tell me one final thing.

“I’m sorry for the part I played. I didn’t ask Lucas to leave you, but I knew he was married and I still let him make me the center of his attention because I needed help. That wasn’t fair to you.”

Then she left.

Lucas sat across from Mason at our dining table.

My son studied him with the same concentration he used when something in a science kit did not work the way the instructions promised.

“Are you actually my dad?”

Lucas nodded. “Yes.”

“Why weren’t you here?”

“Because I didn’t know you existed.”
