Keep your windows closed to prevent spiders from entering your home.

Part 2 of 2

The wolf spider (family Lycosidae) is robust, with brown or gray coloring and distinctive back patterns that resemble a wolf. Unlike other spiders, it does not spin webs but hunts its prey directly. Found in gardens, soil crevices, and damp corners, its venom is not lethal but its bite is extremely painful and causes intense swelling.

Recognizing these spiders quickly can make a big difference in knowing how to react and when to seek medical help.

When Are Spiders Most Active?

Spiders are especially active in the warmer months. During spring and summer, their numbers increase thanks to the abundance of insects such as mosquitoes, and many species enter homes to reproduce or build nests. In autumn, they often seek warmth indoors as temperatures begin to drop. While winter reduces their activity, it doesn’t eliminate it entirely — many simply stay hidden in corners until conditions improve.

How to Prevent Spiders in the Home

The good news is that simple habits can drastically reduce the risk of unwanted arachnid visitors. Keep windows closed or covered with fine mesh screens to allow ventilation without giving spiders a way in. Seal cracks and gaps in walls, ceilings, or floors, as these are common entry points.

Maintain a tidy home, avoiding piles of boxes, papers, or unused objects where spiders can easily hide. Shake out clothes and shoes that have been stored away, and take care when handling firewood or stored materials, since these are frequent hiding places. Regular vacuuming, especially behind furniture and in dark corners, also helps. Outside, keep your garden neat by mowing the lawn and trimming plants so they don’t press directly against your house walls.

By understanding which spiders are dangerous, where they tend to hide, and how to keep them at bay, you can reduce risks while also enjoying the peace of mind of a safer, more comfortable home.
