MY DAD CHARGED ME $250 IN RENT EVERY MONTH FOR FIVE YEARS — AFTER HIS FUNERAL, I DISCOVERED WHAT HE HAD BEEN HIDING

Part 2 of 3

He died five years after introducing his monthly rent requirement.

I was twenty-three years old.

At his funeral, relatives described him as hardworking, dependable, and fiercely devoted to his family.

I listened silently, wondering whether they had known a different version of my father.

For years, I had imagined how peaceful the house might become without his constant criticism.

Yet when I returned from the cemetery, the silence felt unbearable.

His work boots stood beside the front door, their worn leather carrying the shape of his feet.

I stared at them for several minutes, unable to move them.

Whatever resentment I had carried, I suddenly understood that there would never be another opportunity to resolve it.

That evening, someone knocked on the door.

Walter stood outside holding a medium-sized cardboard box sealed with packing tape.

His eyes were red, and he looked as though he had been struggling with a difficult decision.

“Your father asked me to give you this after he passed away, Nathan, and I promised him I would follow his instructions.”

He placed the box on the kitchen table.

I attempted a bitter joke.

“What did he leave me, Walter, a detailed record of every rent payment he managed to collect?”

Walter didn’t smile.

“Open it before you decide what your father wanted you to understand, because there are things he struggled to explain while he was alive.”

I cut through the tape and lifted the cardboard flaps.

Inside were an old leather vest, several backstage passes, guitar picks, concert photographs, and a collection of faded newspaper clippings.

One photograph showed Dad performing with his guitar raised above his head while hundreds of people crowded toward the stage.

Another showed Mom standing beside him, smiling as he played.

They looked completely absorbed in each other, radiating a happiness I hadn’t seen in my father since childhood.

I sank into his kitchen chair and began crying.

The photographs reminded me of evenings filled with laughter, music, and the smell of Mom’s cooking.

Walter rested a hand on my shoulder but didn’t interrupt.

After I regained control of myself, he quietly left, allowing me to examine the remaining contents alone.

Beneath the leather vest, I discovered a small metal key attached to a tag bearing an unfamiliar address.

There was no explanation.

I checked the box again, searching for a letter or instructions, but found nothing.

Eventually, curiosity overcame my exhaustion, and I grabbed my jacket and car keys.

Part 4: The Door My Father Never Opened for Me

The address led to a quiet industrial area beyond the outskirts of Dayton.

I passed several storage buildings, an abandoned gas station, and a row of warehouses before locating the structure marked on the tag.

From outside, it appeared to be an ordinary brick building with dark windows and an unremarkable entrance.

There was no company sign or indication that anyone regularly used the property.

The only detail that seemed unusual was a clean doormat positioned neatly before the door.

I inserted the key into the lock.

It turned immediately.

After hesitating for several seconds, I pushed open the door and found a light switch.

The room illuminated, revealing something so unexpected that I remained frozen in the entrance.

Acoustic panels covered the walls, while professional studio monitors surrounded a large recording console.

Several microphones stood beside guitar amplifiers, and a drum kit occupied an acoustically isolated section behind glass.

There were keyboards, computer monitors, carefully arranged cables, and more recording equipment than I had ever seen outside professional studios.

I walked farther inside, struggling to comprehend what I was looking at.

My father had apparently been hiding a fully equipped recording studio.

The equipment was clean, properly organized, and ready to use, suggesting that someone had maintained the place regularly.

One wall displayed framed concert posters, photographs, and newspaper articles documenting Dad’s former musical career.

I discovered that his band, Midnight Harbor, had once performed before sold-out crowds at the Riverside Theater.

Newspaper photographs showed audiences cheering while Dad and his bandmates played beneath brilliant stage lights.

The quiet, exhausted man who had raised me had once possessed an entirely different life.

I moved toward a collection of guitars arranged beside the keyboard.

One instrument immediately caught my attention.

It was a black electric guitar with a small silver star sticker near the neck.

My guitar.

I had purchased it when I was sixteen and used it constantly until our arguments became unbearable. Several years earlier, it disappeared during a bedroom cleanup, and I assumed I had accidentally thrown it away.

Now it stood on a polished guitar stand with new strings.

Someone had even repaired a crack near the bridge.

I carefully lifted the instrument, running my fingers across the familiar surface.

My father hadn’t discarded my music.

He had preserved it.

Beside the recording console lay a USB drive marked with a handwritten label.

Our Band.

I recognized Dad’s handwriting immediately.

When I connected the drive to the studio computer, a single video file appeared.

I clicked play.

The screen filled with grainy footage of four young musicians practicing inside a cramped garage.

Dad stood in the center, his long hair brushing his shoulders as he argued playfully with Walter about the rhythm.

“Come on, Walter, my grandmother could keep better time than that, and she’s never touched a drum kit!”

Walter laughed and shouted back.

“Then invite your grandmother to rehearsal, Richard, because somebody needs to teach you how to follow the drummer!”

The video continued through concert performances, backstage jokes, and chaotic rehearsals.

I laughed through my tears as I watched Dad stumble while attempting to jump from a speaker cabinet.

For the first time, I saw the playful man my mother had loved rather than the withdrawn father I remembered.

Then the footage stopped.

The screen faded to black before another recording began.

Dad appeared again, but this time he looked exactly as he had during his final illness.

He was sitting inside the same recording studio, visibly weakened by cancer.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Hello, son. If you’re watching this, then Walter kept his promise, and I suppose it’s finally time for me to explain a few things.”

Part 5: The Apology I Never Expected to Hear

Dad lowered his eyes and rubbed his hands together before continuing.

“I’ve never been good at talking about feelings, Nathan, and I know you’ve suffered because I couldn’t figure out how to tell you what was happening inside me.”
