Part 2 of 3

My foot caught the stone edge.

I lost my balance.

A second later, Maisie and I fell into the cold water.

The shock took my breath away.

I immediately lifted my daughter into my arms, making sure her face stayed above the surface.

Her lavender dress was soaked.

Her little shoes floated briefly before settling beneath the water.

“Mommy!” she cried. “I’m cold! I want Daddy!”

I held her tightly.

“I’ve got you, sweetheart. You’re safe. Mommy’s here.”

Around us, several guests gasped.

A few people laughed nervously, apparently believing it was some kind of cruel joke.

Then Trevor began clapping.

“Well, that certainly made the reception memorable!”

A few of his friends joined in.

My sister stood beside him, staring at her stained dress.

My mother looked more concerned about the attention than about her granddaughter.

And my father?

He simply adjusted his jacket.

“Perhaps now you’ll understand that actions have consequences.”

I stared at him.

For years, I’d tolerated his criticism.

I’d endured the cold phone calls, the insulting comments, and the way he pretended Maisie barely existed.

But seeing my daughter shivering in my arms changed something inside me.

I climbed out of the fountain, my wet dress clinging to my legs.

A kind older woman approached with a napkin.

“Honey, are you both all right?”

“We’re going to be,” I whispered.

Then I reached for my phone.

The Message That Changed the Wedding

My hands were shaking as I called Bennett.

He answered immediately.

“Willa? What’s wrong?”

I tried to keep my voice steady.

“Bennett, Dad pushed us into the fountain. Maisie’s soaking wet, and she’s frightened.”

There was a brief silence.

Then his voice changed.

“Is she hurt?”

“I don’t think so. She’s just very cold.”

“Keep her close. I’m two minutes away.”

I looked toward the entrance.

“Bennett, please don’t make a scene. I just want to go home.”

His reply was gentle.

“I understand. But nobody gets to treat you or our daughter this way. I’m coming to get you.”

I ended the call.

My father had been watching.

“Who was that?” he demanded.

I wrapped Maisie’s damp cardigan around her shoulders.

“My husband.”

He stared at me.

Then he laughed.

“Your husband? Since when do you have a husband?”

Trevor smirked.

“Let me guess. Some guy who works at a gas station?”

I looked at him calmly.

“You might want to be careful what you say next.”

He raised his eyebrows.

“And why would that be?”

Before I could answer, the sound of engines came from the country club driveway.

Three black SUVs pulled up outside the reception entrance.

Several men in dark suits stepped out.

Then Bennett emerged from the middle vehicle.

And suddenly, the laughter stopped.

The Man Nobody Expected

Bennett walked through the garden with two members of his security team following several steps behind.

He wore a charcoal-gray suit, but there was nothing showy about him.

He didn’t need to raise his voice.

His presence alone made people turn.

Trevor was the first to recognize him.

The color drained from his face.

“Mr. Ashford?”

Bennett didn’t answer.

He walked straight toward Maisie and me.

The moment my daughter saw him, she stretched out both arms.

“Daddy!”

He immediately removed his jacket and wrapped it around her.

Then he lifted her against his chest.

“Hey, princess. I’ve got you.”

Maisie buried her face in his shoulder.

“Grandpa made Mommy fall in the water. I got all wet.”

Bennett kissed her forehead.

“I’m sorry that happened, sweetheart. We’re going home soon.”

He turned toward me.

His expression softened.

“Are you okay?”

I nodded, although tears had begun rolling down my cheeks.

“I am now.”

He placed one arm around me.

Behind him, Trevor looked as though he’d forgotten how to speak.

“Mr. Ashford, I didn’t realize you knew Willa.”

Bennett turned.

“I know her very well.”

Trevor swallowed.

“Of course. I just meant—”

“She’s my wife.”

The words seemed to freeze the entire reception.

My mother stared at me.

My sister covered her mouth.

My father looked from Bennett to Maisie and back again.

“Your wife?” Trevor repeated.

Bennett nodded.

“We’ve been married for almost five years. Maisie is our daughter.”

Nobody spoke.

Then my father forced an awkward smile.

“Well, this is quite a surprise. Willa never told us.”

Bennett looked directly at him.

“I think tonight explains why.”

The CEO Who Forgot Who Owned His Company

Trevor stepped closer, suddenly eager to appear friendly.

“Mr. Ashford, I’m sure there’s been a misunderstanding. We were simply dealing with an unfortunate accident.”

Bennett’s expression remained calm.

“An accident involving spilled wine, or the decision to push my wife and daughter into a fountain?”

Trevor opened his mouth but said nothing.

Bennett continued.

“I also understand you made some comments about people who don’t belong at events like this.”

Trevor’s face tightened.

“It was a joke. Nothing serious.”

“My daughter didn’t find it funny.”

A long silence followed.

Then Bennett looked toward one of his associates.

“Has the legal team received the report?”

“Yes, sir. The incident has been documented, and the relevant footage is being preserved.”

Trevor suddenly looked alarmed.

“Legal team? What does that have to do with me?”

Bennett faced him.

“Your company operates under Ashford Holdings’ controlling investment structure. As chairman, I’m responsible for ensuring its leadership meets our standards.”

Trevor’s smile disappeared completely.

“Mr. Ashford, surely we can discuss this privately.”

“We will. With the board and our legal counsel.”

Bennett paused.

“Effective immediately, I’m requesting an independent review of your conduct and your position as CEO. Until that review is complete, your executive authority will be suspended in accordance with company procedures.”

Trevor took a step backward.

“You can’t be serious.”

“I’m very serious.”

The surrounding guests began whispering.

My sister grabbed Trevor’s arm.

“What’s happening? Trevor, tell me what’s going on.”

He pulled away.
