Happy Soul Moral Stories

My husband and I spent years fighting to keep our little girl alive, and when the doctors told us she only had one wish left, we sold jewelry, worked extra jobs, and accepted help from strangers just to take her to Florida. But on the morning we were supposed to fly home, the hotel manager quietly pulled me aside and whispered, “There’s something about this trip your husband never told you.”

Part 2 of 3

About fifteen minutes later, I followed him.

That’s when the hotel manager stopped me.

That’s when she handed me the envelope.

Inside was one folded sheet of paper.

Emily,

I don’t expect forgiveness.

I don’t expect explanations.

I only wanted the chance to ask whether my granddaughter might someday know that her father once had a family who loved him very much.

If the answer is still no, I’ll leave immediately.

If the answer is maybe…

I’ll wait.

—Robert

The paper trembled in my hands.

The manager spoke softly.

“He also helped pay for part of your stay.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

She nodded.

“He asked us never to tell you unless you chose to meet him.”

Everything around me suddenly sounded distant.

Rolling suitcases.

Children laughing.

Airport shuttles arriving.

I walked outside.

Tony looked up from the trunk.

The moment he saw the envelope, the color drained from his face.

He didn’t ask what was inside.

He already knew.

The Truth Tony Had Hidden

I stopped a few feet away.

“Did you do this?”

Tony closed the trunk without answering.

I asked again.

“Did you invite Robert here?”

He rubbed both hands across his jeans before speaking.

“Yes.”

One word.

Nothing more.

I felt heat rising into my face.

“You had absolutely no right.”

People nearby turned toward us before pretending not to listen.

Tony lowered his voice.

“I know.”

“Then why?”

He swallowed.

“About two months ago I was looking for Lily’s birth certificate.”

I waited.

“I found a box in the hall closet.”

He looked directly at me.

“There was one unopened letter.”

I stared at him.

He continued quietly.

“It was from Robert.”

I hadn’t even realized one remained unopened.

Tony’s eyes filled with regret.

“I shouldn’t have read it.”

He paused.

“But once I did… I couldn’t forget it.”

“What did it say?”

“He wrote that he’d spend the rest of his life respecting your decision.”

Tony’s voice became even softer.

“But if you ever changed your mind—even twenty years later—he’d come meet Lily wherever she was.”

I looked past Tony.

Robert still stood beneath the palm tree.

He hadn’t taken a single step closer.

Tony shook his head.

“I didn’t promise him anything.”

“I only told him where we were.”

“I told him he wasn’t coming unless you agreed.”

I folded the letter back into its envelope.

“You made that decision for me.”

Tony didn’t defend himself.

He simply nodded.

“I know.”

Neither of us noticed the elevator doors opening behind us.

A small voice spoke before either of us could say another word.

“Mom?”

We both turned.

Lily stood beside her wheelchair, still wearing yesterday’s tiny silver tiara.

She looked from my face…

…to Tony’s…

…then across the driveway toward the unfamiliar older man waiting beneath the palm tree.

“Who’s that?”

Lily Chose for Herself

Neither Tony nor I answered Lily immediately.

She looked from my face to the envelope still clutched in my hand.

Then she looked through the hotel doors toward the elderly man waiting beneath the palm tree.

“Mom… who’s that?”

I knelt beside her wheelchair.

For a moment, I considered lying.

Telling her he was someone who had the wrong hotel.

Someone waiting for another family.

But she’d spent eight years fighting a disease that had forced her to grow up far too quickly.

She deserved the truth.

“Sweetheart… that’s your daddy’s father.”

She blinked.

“My grandpa?”

I nodded.

She had seen photographs of Adam throughout her childhood.

She knew his name.

She knew he loved old country music, burned pancakes almost every Sunday, and wanted to teach her to fish one day.

But every story had come from me.

She had never met anyone who knew him before he became the smiling young man in framed photographs.

Lily looked toward Robert again.

He still hadn’t moved.

“Why is he standing all the way over there?”

Before I could answer, Tony quietly spoke.

“Because I asked him to wait until your mom decided.”

Lily turned to him.

“You invited him?”

Tony nodded once.

There wasn’t any defense in his voice.

“I did.”

I stood.

“Tony, we are not doing this here.”

He looked at me.

“I know you’re angry.”

“Angry?” I whispered. “You contacted the one person from my past I chose to leave behind, and you did it during our daughter’s final trip.”

He lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.”

There was nothing else he could say.

No explanation would change what he’d done.

The silence lasted several seconds before Lily quietly reached for my hand.

“Can I decide?”

I looked down at her.

She wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t frightened.

She simply sounded curious.

Like a little girl asking whether she could choose strawberry ice cream instead of chocolate.

I swallowed.

“If that’s what you want.”

She smiled.

“I want to meet him.”
