A minute later, it returned.

Stronger.

The woman across from me noticed.

“Are you okay?”

“I think so.”

Her eyes dropped toward my stomach.

“How far along are you?”

“Twenty-eight weeks.”

She hesitated.

“One baby?”

I swallowed.

“Three.”

She immediately stood and offered me more space.

Then another contraction came.

This time I couldn’t pretend everything was fine.

Someone called for emergency assistance.

The woman beside me held my hand.

All I could think was: Not tonight.

Not this early.

Not when I had nowhere to go.

I looked through the rain-covered window.

That was when the black sedan appeared.

The Stranger Who Knew My Name

The car stopped near the bus.

A tall man in a charcoal coat stepped out into the rain.

He looked toward the windows.

Then he saw me.

His expression changed immediately.

He hurried toward the bus just as the medical team arrived.

The doors opened.

He climbed inside.

“Mallory Keene?”

My entire body went cold.

“Who are you?”

He looked at the ultrasound photograph in my hand.

Then back at me.

“Everett Shaw.”

I had never heard the name.

“How do you know me?”

He paused.

“Because I’ve spent three weeks trying to find you.”

I tightened my grip on the photograph.

“Why?”

Everett looked toward the medical team.

“This isn’t the place to explain it.”

As they prepared to move me, he stepped aside.

But before I passed him, he said something that stayed in my mind all the way to the hospital.

“Wesley had no right to leave you like this.”

I stared at him.

“You know my husband?”

Everett didn’t answer.

And somehow, his silence frightened me more than an answer would have.

Two Men Who Were Not Strangers

At the hospital, everything moved quickly.

Monitors were attached.

Questions were asked.

Doctors came and went.

They were trying to slow things down and give the babies as much time as possible.

I concentrated on breathing.

Then I heard a familiar voice.

“Mallory.”

Wesley stood in the doorway.

His hair was wet from the rain, and for the first time that day, he looked unsettled.

“What are you doing here?”

“The hospital contacted me.”

“Why?”

He hesitated.

I remembered that Wesley had business relationships throughout the local medical network.

Someone must have recognized the family name.

I looked directly at him.

“Where is Delaney?”

His face tightened.

“That doesn’t matter right now.”

I almost laughed.

“A few hours ago, she mattered enough for you to leave your pregnant wife with divorce papers.”

He stepped closer.

“We can talk about this later.”

“No. I’m done waiting until later.”

Before he could answer, the door opened.

Everett walked in.

Wesley stopped moving.

The two men stared at each other.

I knew immediately.

They had met before.

“You,” Wesley said quietly.

Everett closed the door.

“Yes. Me.”

I looked between them.

“Someone needs to tell me what is happening.”

Wesley pointed toward the door.

“He has no reason to be here.”

Everett remained calm.

“Actually, I have a very good reason.”

Then he placed a large envelope on the table beside my bed.

The Money Was Never Just Money

Everett looked at me.

“Before Wesley asks you to sign anything else, you need to know what happened to some of the assets connected to your marriage.”

Wesley’s face changed.

“Don’t do this here.”

Everett ignored him.

He opened the envelope.

Inside were financial records, company filings, transfer documents, and property agreements.

I looked at Wesley.

“What is this?”

He didn’t answer.

Everett did.

“Records showing that certain assets were moved before the divorce paperwork was prepared.”

My stomach tightened for an entirely different reason.

“Moved where?”

Everett placed several pages in front of me.

Then he pulled out a photograph.

I recognized Delaney immediately.

But Wesley wasn’t standing beside her.

A woman with silver-blonde hair was walking into a private office with her.

I knew that woman too.

Wesley’s mother, Diane Bradford.
