Her stuffed animals.

Family photographs.

My mother’s cedar chest.

The quilt my grandmother had made.

Furniture I had purchased before the marriage stayed on the inventory Nathan had helped me prepare.

Derek’s belongings remained untouched.

So did our jointly purchased furniture.

I wasn’t trying to leave him four empty walls.

I was removing the parts of my life I could clearly call mine.

Jenna found me standing in the bedroom holding a green dress.

I had worn it on our seventh anniversary.

That night, I had spent nearly an hour getting ready.

When I walked downstairs, Derek had looked up from his phone and said:

“You look fine.”

At the time, I had convinced myself it didn’t matter.

Now Jenna touched the sleeve.

“Take it.”

I shook my head.

“I’ll probably never wear it again.”

“Then never wear it again. But don’t let Derek decide what it means.”

I folded the dress and placed it inside the box.

What I Told Our Daughter

When I picked Sadie up from school, she immediately noticed that something was different.

“Why is Aunt Jenna following us?”

I smiled gently.

“We’re staying with her for a little while.”

Her expression changed.

“Is Dad coming?”

I crouched beside her.

“Dad is still traveling.”

Sadie watched my face carefully.

“Are you two mad at each other?”

There are moments when parents want desperately to give children answers simple enough to make everything painless.

But I didn’t want to lie.

“I’m disappointed about some choices Dad made. The grown-ups need time to work things out.”

She looked down at her backpack.

Then she asked:

“Did I do something?”

I pulled her close.

“Absolutely not. Nothing happening between Dad and me is because of you. You are loved more than anything.”

She hugged me tightly.

Then, in the wonderfully practical way children sometimes rescue adults from unbearable moments, she asked:

“Can Pickles come?”

Pickles was a stuffed rabbit missing half an ear.

“Pickles is already packed.”

For the first time all day, I smiled.

Bali Wasn’t Going the Way He Expected

Derek began calling two days later.

At first, his messages sounded normal.

Had I paid the utility bill?

Was Sadie practicing for her performance?

Could I send him the garage keypad code?

Then his tone changed.

“Lauren, call me.”

An hour later:

“Why are you staying with Jenna?”

Then:

“What is going on?”

I responded only once.

“Sadie and I are safe. Please communicate with me through my attorney for now.”

His reply arrived almost immediately.

“Attorney? Lauren, what are you talking about?”

I turned my phone over.

He knew exactly what I was talking about.

He simply didn’t know how much I knew.

The House He Expected to Find

Derek returned ten days after leaving.

His flight landed shortly before nine in the morning.

By 9:20, my phone was ringing.

I didn’t answer.

He called again.

Then again.

Finally, a message appeared.

“Lauren, I’m standing in the house. Where is everything?”

A second message came less than a minute later.

“Call me NOW.”

I stared at the screen.

For months, he had treated our home like background scenery.

The meals appeared.

The laundry got done.

His daughter was cared for.

Appointments were remembered.

Birthdays were planned.

He thought all of it existed automatically.

Now he was finally looking at the spaces where my invisible work used to be.

At 10:07, an unfamiliar number called.

I almost ignored it.

Something made me answer.

“Hello?”

A woman spoke.

“Is this Lauren Whitman?”

“Yes.”

There was a pause.

“My name is Tessa Monroe.”

My entire body went still.

The Woman From Bali

I walked into Jenna’s living room and closed the door.

“Why are you calling me?”

Tessa took a shaky breath.

“Because Derek lied to me too.”

I said nothing.

She continued.

“He told me you two had been separated for almost a year.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“He told you that?”

“He said you were still living in the same house because of Sadie. He told me the marriage was finished and you both knew it.”

I sat down slowly.

Suddenly, the Bali trip looked different.

It didn’t excuse Tessa.

But Derek had apparently built two separate stories for two separate women.

“When did you find out?” I asked.

“In Bali. I saw a recent family photo on his phone. I asked questions. His answers stopped making sense.”

I closed my eyes.
