Hidden Moral Stories

My Millionaire Husband Bought His Mistress a $12 Million Penthouse While I Gave Birth to Our Twins. He Ignored 28 Calls, Then Came Home Expecting My Forgiveness—But Both Cribs Were Empty, and One Call From My Lawyer Left Him Speechless…

Part 2 of 3

The calls kept coming, but with the sound muted, it became surprisingly easy to pretend they were not happening.

Shortly after one in the morning, my executive assistant, Daniel, finally reached me through the yacht’s captain.

His voice sounded strained.

“Nate, Margaret’s at the hospital. The babies are coming, and she’s been trying to reach you for hours.”

I stood so abruptly that my chair scraped across the deck.

“Is she all right?”

“I don’t have all the details, but her sister is with her. You need to get back here.”

My aircraft was available, and the crew could have prepared for departure almost immediately, so I told Daniel to arrange transportation while I went to collect my jacket.

Then Vanessa caught my arm.

“You’re leaving right now?”

“Margaret’s having the twins.”

She stared at me for a moment before tears appeared in her eyes.

“So after everything you’ve promised me, you’re just going to walk away?”

“Vanessa, my children are being born.”

“And what am I supposed to be to you? Someone you can abandon whenever your other life needs you?”

I remember looking toward the shore, knowing that a car could take me to the airport within minutes, and feeling the uncomfortable weight of a choice that should never have required consideration.

“If you leave tonight,” Vanessa continued, “don’t expect me to be here when you come back.”

I wish I could say I recognized the manipulation immediately and walked away.

Instead, I allowed the fear of losing her to become more important than the certainty that Margaret needed me.

I called Daniel back and told him to delay the flight.

There was no emergency preventing me from returning, no mechanical problem, no storm closing the airport.

I simply chose to stay.

At 3:14 that morning, Benjamin entered the world, and two minutes later Abigail followed.

Our daughter needed additional assistance with her breathing, and while the medical team cared for her, Margaret repeatedly asked whether anyone had managed to reach me.

The hospital called.

Daniel called.

Margaret called whenever she was able.

I saw several of those attempts and left the phone unanswered.

By morning, I knew both babies had arrived, yet instead of immediately returning home, I accompanied Vanessa to a furniture showroom because she wanted to choose a dining table for her new penthouse.

I can still remember standing beside an enormous marble table while she discussed upholstery samples with a saleswoman, knowing that my wife was recovering in a hospital room and that our daughter had needed special attention during her first hours.

There are memories that become less painful with time.

That one has never softened.

The Message Beside the Empty Cribs

When I finally returned to Connecticut, I was prepared for Margaret’s anger, although I had imagined that she would still be there to hear my explanations.

I had rehearsed apologies during the flight and considered arranging a family vacation once the babies were old enough to travel, as though a beautiful destination might somehow compensate for the hours I had deliberately missed.

Standing in the empty nursery, those plans seemed absurd.

The tablet on the dresser displayed a video waiting to be played, and beneath it Margaret had placed a small handwritten note.

Please watch this before you call me.

I sat on the floor beside the dresser and pressed play.

Margaret appeared on the screen wearing a pale hospital gown, her hair loosely gathered behind her head and her face showing the exhaustion of someone who had been through a long, difficult night.

She was holding our babies, one resting against each arm.

For several seconds, I could only stare.

Benjamin had a small, serious face and a soft covering of brown hair, while Abigail slept with one hand tucked beneath her cheek, looking so much like Margaret that my eyes filled before I realized I was crying.

“Nathaniel, I want you to meet Benjamin and Abigail.”

Her voice was gentle, almost unbearably gentle.

“They’re beautiful, and they’re doing well now, although Abby needed some extra help when she first arrived.”

She glanced down at our daughter and adjusted the blanket around her shoulders.

“I kept thinking you would walk through the door. Even after the nurses told me they hadn’t heard from you, I kept looking toward the hallway.”

I leaned closer to the screen.

“I called you twelve times, Nathaniel. The hospital called seven times, and Daniel tried nine times. That’s twenty-eight chances for you to answer.”

Margaret paused, gathering herself before continuing.

“I know you received at least some of those calls because Daniel told me he spoke with you. I know you understood what was happening, and I know you could have come home.”

Her eyes met the camera.

“I also know about Vanessa.”

I stopped breathing for a moment.

“I’ve known for four months, and I know about the apartment you bought her in Florida.”

Margaret looked away briefly, as though the next words required more strength than she had expected.
