On Christmas Eve, He Went to His Ex-Wife’s House to Confront the Man Who Had Replaced Him—Instead, She Placed His Six-Day-Old Son in His Arms… And What He Learned Next Made Him Unable to Look His Own Mother in the Eye

Part 2 of 3

“Why would my mother want an infant’s medical records?”

Dr. Price looked at Maren.

“That is something you both need to discuss immediately.”

The Messages That Never Reached Him

After Dr. Price left, Maren placed Callan in a bassinet beside the fireplace.

Everett remained standing, too shaken to sit.

“Tell me everything.”

Maren folded her arms as if she were holding herself together.

She had learned about the pregnancy three weeks after Everett moved out. At first, she was frightened, but she still believed he deserved to know.

She went to Langford Systems during the launch of a major cybersecurity division. Hundreds of guests, reporters, and investors had filled the building.

Everett’s chief financial officer, Celeste Arden, met Maren near the executive elevators.

Celeste had worked beside Everett for more than a decade. She controlled his calendar, screened urgent calls, and often decided who could reach him during major events.

“She told me you refused to see me,” Maren said.

Everett frowned.

“I never knew you were there.”

“She said you were tired of discussing our marriage and that I needed to stop embarrassing myself.”

Maren left a voice message that night. The following morning, she sent two emails.

The voice message disappeared.

Both emails returned as blocked.

Several days later, a letter arrived without a return address. It warned that if Maren claimed Everett was the father, Langford attorneys would question her stability, challenge her ability to raise the child, and seek full control of the baby.

“I thought the letter came from you,” Maren admitted.

Everett recoiled.

“You believed I would do that?”

She looked directly at him.

“I believed it because of the man you had become.”

The words hurt because they were true.

Everett had spent years allowing assistants, attorneys, and executives to control access to him. He had become distant enough that a threat like that seemed believable.

He lowered his head.

“I am sorry I gave you reasons to think I was capable of it.”

Maren’s expression softened slightly, but she did not comfort him.

“An apology does not change what happened.”

“I know.”

For the first time in years, Everett did not defend himself.

He simply accepted the truth.

A Place Where They Could Disappear

Dr. Price had recommended that Maren and Callan avoid staying in the townhouse until they understood who had accessed the medical information.

Everett offered his late father’s country house near Middleburg, Virginia. The property had remained empty since Walter Langford passed away two years earlier.

Maren hesitated.

“I am not going anywhere where your mother can control me.”

“She does not have access to the house. My father transferred it into a separate trust before he died.”

“And you?”

Everett understood the question.

“I will not enter any room unless you allow it. I will not make decisions for Callan without you. I only want both of you somewhere safer.”

Maren studied him, then finally agreed.

Before leaving, Everett asked to hold the baby.

His voice almost failed.

“May I?”

Maren carefully placed Callan in his arms.

Everett had never held anything that made him feel so powerful and helpless at the same time.

The baby’s fingers closed around his thumb.

Everett stared at that tiny hand and struggled to remain steady.

“Hello, Callan,” he whispered. “I am sorry I am late.”

They traveled in Maren’s car because it already had a properly installed infant seat. Everett’s expensive sports car remained parked outside, useless in the most important moment of his life.

During the drive, he did not make calls or send messages.

He sat beside the baby and watched him breathe.

The Call That Changed Everything

The country house stood among bare trees and quiet fields. Inside, the stone fireplace still held the faint scent of the cedarwood Everett’s father had loved.

After Maren fed Callan and settled him near the fire, Everett called his mother.

Lenora answered on the second ring.

“I wondered when you would contact me.”

“Did your attorneys request Callan’s medical records?”

There was no hesitation.

“I authorized a review.”

“You used a false signature.”

“Do not be dramatic. I was protecting the Langford name.”

Everett walked toward the window.

“He is a newborn, not a corporate liability.”

“He is your son, which means his future affects the company.”

“His future belongs to him and his mother.”

Lenora laughed softly.

“Maren has filled your head with emotion. Ask her why she visited your father three weeks before he died. Ask what he gave her.”

The call ended.

For one brief moment, doubt returned.

Maren saw it.

Instead of becoming defensive, she opened her bag and removed a worn envelope.

“Your father gave me this.”

Inside was a handwritten letter from Walter Langford.

He admitted that he had allowed Lenora to control too many lives because confronting her had seemed difficult. He wrote that Maren had visited because she was worried about Everett, not because she wanted money.

The final line made Everett’s hands shake.

“Trust Maren when the family name begins destroying the people it claims to protect.”

Minutes later, Everett received a call from Pierce Dalton, his father’s former estate attorney.

The request for Callan’s records had activated a secret clause in Walter’s trust.

If anyone attempted to manipulate the identity, medical history, or custody of Everett’s child, temporary voting authority over thirty-four percent of Langford Systems would transfer to an independent guardian.

That guardian was Maren.

She looked horrified.

“I do not want control of your company.”

Pierce answered calmly.

“That is exactly why Walter chose you.”

Then he sent Everett a protected video recorded shortly before his father died.

In the video, Walter warned Everett not to sign anything presented by Lenora or Celeste.

Then he revealed something no one expected.

Callan might not be the first child they had hidden from him.

The Son Who Had Been Missing for Fourteen Years

Fourteen years earlier, Everett had loved a young art conservation student named Audrey Mercer.
