Part 3 of 3

Rain was falling against the hospital windows.

I had spent the afternoon trying to concentrate on my patients, but the same question kept returning.

What if Oliver really was my son?

Graham placed another folder on my desk.

“There’s someone else we need to discuss.”

He showed me a photograph.

The woman looked familiar.

Dark shoulder-length hair. Silver glasses. A polite expression.

“Her name is Meredith Vale,” Graham explained. “She previously worked as an administrative coordinator at your fertility clinic.”

I remembered her immediately.

Meredith had scheduled appointments and helped explain complicated paperwork.

She had always seemed kind.

“What does she have to do with this?”

Graham showed me a financial record.

“Preston’s company transferred twenty-five thousand dollars to a consulting business connected to Meredith around the time your embryos were released.”

I stared at the amount.

During our divorce, Preston had argued over furniture, savings, and even my grandmother’s antique dining set.

Yet he had somehow found $25,000 for a woman connected to our clinic.

“Do you think he paid her to help with the paperwork?”

“It’s a possibility,” Graham replied. “But we need evidence before making that accusation.”

I looked at Meredith’s photograph again.

Then something occurred to me.

“I knew her before the fertility clinic.”

Graham leaned forward.

“From where?”

“She worked at the medical office where my mother received treatment years ago. I remember her because she sent our family a sympathy card after Mom passed away.”

Graham wrote that down.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes. I remember her handwriting and her silver glasses.”

He studied the photograph.

“We’ll need to verify her employment history and determine whether that earlier connection matters.”

I nodded.

But a troubling thought had already taken hold.

Meredith had known my family long before she handled my fertility records.

And now her name appeared beside a mysterious payment from my ex-husband.

The Message That Revealed Another Secret

At 7:26 that evening, my phone vibrated.

The message came from an unfamiliar number.

There was no greeting.

Only a photograph.

It showed a storage room containing several large medical tanks.

In the foreground, someone wearing gloves held a small white label.

The words printed on it made my heart race.

WHITAKER / BROOKS — EMBRYO GROUP B

Below the photograph was a short message.

“Ask Preston what happened to Group A.”

I read it twice.

Then I handed my phone to Graham.

His expression grew serious.

“Don’t respond yet. We need to preserve this message and find out where it came from.”

I could barely hear him.

Group B.

Group A.

Until that morning, I had believed there were no embryos remaining from my marriage.

Now I had learned that one group might have been used without my permission.

And another group appeared to have existed.

“Graham, how many embryos did we have?”

He opened the clinic records.

“The documents we’ve received refer to two separate groups of viable embryos after your final retrieval.”

I felt tears filling my eyes.

“And where is Group A?”

He looked at the papers.

“The records don’t clearly explain what happened to it.”

I walked toward the window.

Outside, headlights moved slowly through the rain.

Somewhere in Raleigh, Preston was probably trying to figure out how much Vanessa had revealed.

Somewhere else, Meredith might know exactly what had happened inside that clinic.

And Oliver was sleeping in a home built around a truth nobody had fully explained.

“Could there be another child?” I asked.

Graham was quiet for a moment.

“We don’t have evidence of that, Natalie. Group A may still be stored, or it may have been handled in another way. We need the complete records.”

I nodded.

He was right.

I couldn’t allow fear to become certainty.

But I also couldn’t ignore the possibility.

“Then we find out,” I said.

Graham closed the folder.

“We’ll follow the evidence wherever it leads.”

For the first time that day, I felt something stronger than sadness.

Determination.

Preston had spent years telling me what I could and couldn’t have.

He had decided what I deserved to know.

He had apparently made decisions about embryos that were part of my own medical history.

But he no longer controlled my choices.

I picked up my phone and looked at the mysterious photograph one last time.

Then another message appeared.

“Group A wasn’t destroyed. Someone knows where it went.”

I looked at Graham.

He had seen it too.

Neither of us spoke for several seconds.

Then I asked the question that would change everything about what happened next.

“If Oliver came from Group B… who received Group A?”

And for the first time, I understood that uncovering Preston’s deception might be only the beginning of a much larger story.

Ten Lessons About Trust, Family, and Finding the Truth

1. Sometimes the deepest disappointment comes from the people we trusted most, but their choices do not determine our worth or erase the possibility of building a meaningful future.

2. A relationship cannot survive on promises alone, because genuine love requires honesty, accountability, and respect for the decisions that affect another person’s life.

3. When someone repeatedly makes you question your own memories and experiences, protecting your peace may begin with trusting what you know and seeking the truth.

4. Children should never become symbols of victory in adult disagreements, because every child deserves unconditional love, emotional security, and a life free from unnecessary conflict.

5. Finding the courage to ask difficult questions can be painful, but unanswered questions sometimes keep us trapped in uncertainty far longer than the truth itself.

6. Forgiveness is a deeply personal choice that cannot be demanded, rushed, or used as an excuse to avoid taking responsibility for the harm caused to others.

7. A person who has experienced betrayal can still choose compassion, because protecting an innocent child and holding adults accountable are not opposing values.

8. The strongest response to dishonesty is not always anger or confrontation, but the patience to gather facts, make thoughtful decisions, and protect what truly matters.

9. Rebuilding your life after disappointment does not mean forgetting everything that happened; it means learning to move forward without allowing the past to control your future.

10. No matter how carefully someone hides the truth, every person deserves the opportunity to understand their own story, make informed choices, and find peace through honesty rather than silence.
