Part 1 of 3

The Phone Call That Made Everything Feel Wrong

Three hours before my marriage changed forever, I was standing in our kitchen outside Raleigh, North Carolina, cutting strawberries for my five-year-old son.

Theo sat on a stool across from me, swinging his legs beneath the counter while carefully arranging pieces of fruit into what he called a “race car.”

The afternoon was warm and bright. Sunlight poured through the windows, the washing machine hummed somewhere down the hallway, and for once, life felt pleasantly ordinary.

Then my phone rang.

My husband’s name appeared on the screen.

Grant rarely called during work unless something important had happened.

I answered immediately.

“Hey. Everything okay?”

For several seconds, he said nothing.

I could hear voices somewhere behind him, but he seemed to have stepped away from them.

Then he finally spoke.

“Can you bring Theo to my mother’s house around six?”

I stopped slicing the strawberries.

“Tonight?”

“Yes.”

His voice sounded distant.

Not angry.

Not sad.

Just strangely controlled.

“Why? Is Judith having dinner?”

Another pause.

“We need to talk about something as a family.”

Those words made my stomach tighten.

Grant’s mother, Judith Holloway, had always loved what she called “family discussions.”

In reality, they usually meant Judith had already decided what everyone should think and simply wanted an audience while she announced it.

I lowered my voice.

“Grant, what happened?”

“Please just come, Maren.”

“Are you okay?”

“I’ll explain when you get here.”

Then he ended the call.

For a long moment, I stood there looking at the phone.

Theo glanced up at me.

“Mommy, why did you stop cutting?”

I forced a smile.

“I was just thinking, sweetheart.”

He accepted that answer immediately and returned to his strawberry race car.

Children are wonderful that way.

They still believe adults know what they are doing.

That evening, I would discover how wrong that assumption could be.

The House Full of People

I knew something was seriously wrong before I even parked.

Judith’s driveway was full.

Grant’s older sister was there.

His uncle’s SUV sat near the curb.

Two cousins had parked across the street.

Even Judith’s elderly brother, who rarely attended family gatherings, had come.

This was not a casual dinner.

Theo looked through the window.

“Are we having a party?”

I swallowed.

“Maybe just a family visit.”

Judith opened the front door before I reached it.

Usually, she greeted Theo first.

That night, she barely looked at him.

“Come inside.”

Her tone was so formal that Theo immediately reached for my hand.

The living room was full.

Nearly twenty relatives sat or stood around the room.

Nobody was eating.

Nobody was laughing.

Nobody even pretended this was normal.

Grant stood beside the fireplace.

He looked exhausted, but what bothered me most was that he would not look directly at me.

I held Theo’s hand tighter.

“Would somebody please tell me what this is about?”

Grant finally stepped forward.

There was a white envelope in his hand.

He handed it to me without speaking.

I looked at him.

“What is this?”

“Read it.”

I pulled out several sheets of paper.

The first thing I noticed was the name of a private testing company.

The second was a line near the bottom of the page.

Probability of biological relationship: 0%.

My eyes stayed on the number.

For a few seconds, the words did not connect to anything real.

Then I looked at Grant.

“What am I reading?”

His jaw tightened.

“I had Theo tested.”

The room suddenly felt too small.

“You did what?”

Theo looked up at both of us, confused.

Grant glanced toward him and lowered his voice.

“The result says I’m not his biological father.”

I stared at him.

Then I stared at the paper again.

A strange calm settled over me because the alternative was to completely lose control in front of my child.

“Then the result is wrong.”

Judith stood from her chair.

She wore a perfectly pressed navy blouse and the same pearl earrings she wore whenever she wanted to look dignified while saying something unpleasant.

“Maren, the result came from a professional laboratory.”

I turned toward her.

“I know who my son’s father is.”

Judith folded her arms.

“The report seems quite clear.”

Theo stepped closer to my side.

I could feel his small fingers gripping the fabric of my dress.

I looked at Grant again.

“You tested our son without telling me?”

He finally met my eyes.

“My mother had concerns.”

That sentence hurt more than the document in my hand.

“Your mother had concerns?”

Grant rubbed his forehead.

“Theo doesn’t look much like me. She kept pointing out little things. His hair, his eyes, even the timing around when we first found out you were expecting.”

I almost could not believe what I was hearing.

“And you listened to her?”

He did not answer.

Judith did.

“My son deserved certainty.”

I looked around the room.

Several relatives avoided my eyes.

Others watched me with expressions that suggested they had already made up their minds.

Then I understood.

This was not a conversation.

This was a verdict.

The Moment I Realized My Husband Had Already Chosen a Side

One of Grant’s cousins whispered something to his wife.

His sister shook her head.

Judith remained standing in the center of the room as if she had been appointed judge.

I held the report toward Grant.

“Did you ask the laboratory to verify this?”
