“Already started.”

“Don’t let anyone from Hale know you’re accessing it.”

“Claire…”

His voice became quieter.

“Do you want me to call the police tonight?”

I looked back toward the mansion.

If officers arrived immediately, Ethan and Vivian would deny everything.

They would claim it had been dark humor.

Private speculation.

A misunderstanding.

The revised prenuptial agreement would disappear before sunrise.

The boat would be repaired again.

Phones would be wiped.

Evidence would scatter.

“Not yet,” I answered.

Daniel hesitated.

“You’re taking a risk.”

“No.”

I watched Ethan’s silhouette appear briefly through a second-floor window.

He looked completely relaxed.

“I’m giving them one more chance to expose themselves.”

Sunday Morning Began With a Church Bell

I slept less than two hours.

By seven o’clock the bridal suite at Saint Andrew’s Church buzzed with hair stylists, makeup artists, photographers, and bridesmaids carrying coffee cups.

No one noticed that I barely spoke.

Outside my dressing room window, the church bell rang across the neighborhood.

For a moment, I stood alone.

The white satin dress hung beside me.

My father’s silver cross rested against my collarbone.

I remembered standing beside him in this same church years earlier after my law school graduation.

He had smiled at the stained-glass window above the altar.

“People think integrity matters because someone is watching,” he told me.

“It matters most when nobody is.”

Someone knocked.

“Claire? Ethan wants five minutes before the ceremony.”

Of course he did.

The Last Document He Expected Me to Read

Ethan entered carrying a leather folder.

He kissed my forehead.

The gesture almost made me sick.

“One last piece of paperwork.”

He smiled apologetically.

“My attorney made a few revisions after dinner.”

I accepted the folder.

“Now?”

“Just housekeeping.”

Housekeeping.

That was how he described the document that would hand him control of my father’s company.

I sat beside the window.

Instead of signing immediately, I read every page.

Slowly.

His smile faded after about thirty seconds.

“Everything okay?”

“I’m reading.”

“You’ve already agreed.”

“I agreed to review it.”

He laughed softly.

“Claire, our guests are waiting.”

I turned another page.

Then I found it.

Buried beneath three paragraphs of corporate language was a single clause.

If I became permanently or temporarily unable to manage Morgan Medical Systems, Ethan Hale would immediately receive my proxy voting authority until a court determined otherwise.

Temporary.

Not deceased.

Not missing.

Not incapacitated forever.

Temporary.

A boating accident.

A hospital stay.

A medically induced coma.

Even surviving would have given him exactly what he wanted.

I looked up.

Ethan was watching my face instead of the contract.

Waiting.

Measuring.

For the first time since we met, I saw him as he really was.

Not loving.

Not nervous.

Calculating.

The Pastor Said Something Ethan Never Expected

A volunteer appeared at the door.

“Five minutes.”

Ethan smiled again.

“See? We should get going.”

As he reached for the folder, I pulled it back.

He blinked.

“Claire?”

I picked up the pen.

He relaxed.

The church organ began playing outside.

Guests started taking their seats.

Then the pastor’s voice echoed faintly through the hallway as he welcomed everyone.

“Marriage is a covenant built on truth before one another and before God.”

The words drifted into the room.

Ethan barely reacted.

I did.

I looked once more at the hidden clause.

Then I slowly turned to the signature page.

Instead of writing my name…

I printed three words across the bottom in large black letters.

Ethan frowned.

“What are you doing?”

I capped the pen.

Then I smiled for the first time since the night before.

“Protecting my father’s company.”

Before he could answer, the bridal suite door opened.

Daniel stepped inside first.

Behind him stood a woman in a navy federal prosecutor’s suit holding a thin evidence binder.

Two detectives followed quietly.

The smile disappeared from Ethan’s face.

He finally understood.

The wedding he had spent months planning was about to become the worst day of his life.

The Wedding Never Began

No one spoke for several seconds.

Ethan looked from Daniel to the two detectives, then to the woman carrying the evidence binder.

“Claire… what is this?”

I remained seated.

The wedding dress spread around me like nothing had changed.

Everything had changed.

The woman stepped forward.

“Rebecca Sloan. Assistant United States Attorney.”

She held up her credentials.

“We’re here regarding an ongoing federal financial fraud investigation involving Hale Maritime.”

Vivian’s name hadn’t even been spoken yet, but Ethan’s face lost what little color remained.

Daniel quietly closed the bridal suite door.

The photographer, makeup artist, and bridesmaids had already been escorted into another room to avoid turning them into witnesses before necessary.

For the first time since I had met Ethan three years earlier, we were finally alone with the truth.

One Recording Changed Everything

Rebecca placed a tablet on the table.

“Before anyone says another word, I’d like everyone to hear something.”

She nodded toward Daniel.

He pressed Play.

Vivian’s voice filled the room.

No one moved.

Marcus laughed through the speaker.

“You’ll be one of the richest widowers in Arizona.”

Then Ethan answered.

“Nobody questions a boating accident during a honeymoon.”

The room became impossibly quiet.

Rebecca stopped the recording halfway through.

She didn’t need the rest.

Ethan stared at the tablet.

Then at me.
