Part 2 of 3

He showed her the photograph.

Laurel’s expression changed immediately.

“I didn’t send that.”

“I know.”

The boy looked between them.

“Mom, do you know him?”

Laurel closed her eyes briefly.

“Yes, Everett.”

Everett.

Graham silently repeated the name.

The girl touched Laurel’s sleeve.

“Who is he?”

Laurel crouched so she was level with both children.

“Everett, June, Graham and I knew each other a long time ago.”

The boy was too observant to accept that answer.

“How?”

Laurel hesitated.

“We were married.”

June’s eyes widened.

“Before us?”

“Yes.”

Everett looked at Graham again.

The longer he stared, the more Graham felt as though the floor beneath him were shifting.

Then Everett asked quietly,

“Is he our dad?”

The Answer No One Was Ready to Hear

Laurel stood slowly.

Graham could see that she had spent years preparing for this conversation.

Just not here.

Not beneath hospital lights.

Not because an anonymous person had forced the past into the open.

She took the children’s hands.

“Yes.”

June immediately looked at Graham.

Everett did not.

“He is your biological father.”

Graham felt every word.

Everett finally raised his head.

“Did you know about us?”

“No.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

The boy remained guarded.

“Would you have come if you knew?”

Graham could have said yes immediately.

It would have been comforting.

But after seven years of absence, he believed those children deserved something better than a comforting answer.

They deserved honesty.

“I hope I would have,” Graham said. “But I wasn’t the man then that I should have been. I made terrible choices. What I can tell you is that I wish someone had given me the chance to know you.”

June looked at her mother.

“Why didn’t you tell him?”

Laurel’s face tightened.

“I tried.”

Graham heard the words.

And everything inside him went still.

The Letter

The person inside Room 412 was Laurel’s father, Dennis Merrick.

He had become unwell earlier that afternoon, but his condition was stable and the doctors expected him to recover.

Dennis had once treated Graham like his own son.

Now Graham could barely make himself walk through the door.

Dennis looked older, but his eyes remained sharp.

“Well,” he said quietly. “I wondered how long it would take.”

Graham stopped.

“You knew?”

“Of course I knew.”

Laurel sat beside her father.

Everett and June settled near the window.

Dennis pointed toward a chair.

“Sit.”

Graham obeyed.

Laurel reached into her handbag and removed an old envelope.

“I found out I was pregnant about five weeks after our divorce became final.”

Graham stared at her.

“Five weeks?”

“I called your office repeatedly.”

He shook his head.

“Nobody told me.”

“I emailed you.”

“I never received anything.”

Laurel handed him the envelope.

“Then this arrived.”

Graham recognized the handwriting immediately.

His mother’s.

Inside was a letter telling Laurel that Graham had begun rebuilding his life and that contacting him would only create more pain.

Patricia wrote that bringing children into Graham’s demanding public life would expose them to unwanted attention.

Near the bottom was one final sentence.

Graham has chosen a different future. Please respect his decision.

His hands began shaking.

“My mother sent this?”

Laurel nodded.

“After reading it, I believed you knew.”

“Laurel, I swear I didn’t.”

Her eyes filled.

“How was I supposed to know that? You looked me in the face and told me you didn’t love me. Then your mother told me you wanted a clean break.”

Graham had no defense.

His own words had made Patricia’s lie believable.

The Two Women at the Elevator

When Graham stepped back into the corridor, Patricia was standing near the elevators.

Sloane stood beside her.

Graham stopped.

Neither woman looked surprised to see Laurel.

That frightened him more than anything.

“How did you know where I was?”

Patricia glanced at Sloane.

Sloane answered.

“I called your mother after you left the house.”

Graham looked at them.

“Did either of you know Laurel had children?”

Silence.

Then Patricia whispered,

“I suspected.”

“For how long?”

She lowered her eyes.

“Several years.”

Graham almost laughed because the alternative was saying something he would regret.

“Several years?”

“I saw Laurel with them once.”

“And you never told me?”

“You were married to Sloane. You had finally moved forward.”

Graham stared at his mother.

“You don’t get to decide what ‘moving forward’ means for another person.”

Patricia began crying.

“I thought I was protecting you.”

“From what? My own children?”

Sloane finally stepped forward.

“Graham, this conversation is becoming emotional.”

He turned toward her.

“Why aren’t you surprised?”

Sloane said nothing.

And that silence answered more than words could.

The Missing Report

Before Graham could ask another question, an older man approached them carrying a gray document case.

He introduced himself as Dr. Calvin Rusk.

The name was familiar.
