“Who exactly are you?”

“Dr. Everett Sloan.”

Jocelyn closed her eyes for half a second.

Grant noticed.

“What is going on?”

Dr. Sloan held up the envelope.

“I’ve completed the independent review Laurel requested.”

Grant gave a dismissive laugh.

“Review of what?”

Dr. Sloan looked directly at him.

“The records that show Laurel was never accurately diagnosed as the source of the fertility difficulties in your marriage.”

Grant’s smile disappeared.

No one spoke.

Even the nurses nearby seemed to sense that the conversation had changed.

Grant finally shook his head.

“That’s impossible. We tried for four years.”

I looked at him.

“Yes. We tried for four years using the information you allowed me to see.”

The Secret Hidden Behind My Shame

Grant immediately became defensive.

“I never stopped you from seeing anything.”

“You collected every report.”

“Because you were overwhelmed.”

“You spoke to the clinic without me.”

“Because someone had to handle things.”

Dr. Sloan interrupted calmly.

“The archived records contain reports that do not match several printed copies Laurel received.”

Grant stared at him.

Dr. Sloan continued.

“The original records show that Laurel’s results were substantially different from what she was led to believe.”

Grant’s eyes moved toward Jocelyn.

That glance told me almost as much as the files had.

Months earlier, an internal review had identified a former clinic administrator who had accessed our records repeatedly.

When questioned, the administrator eventually admitted that several summary pages had been replaced.

He had also kept old emails.

Emails from Grant.

The altered reports had allowed Grant to convince me that I was responsible for our situation.

But even that wasn’t the worst part.

By the time I discovered the truth, I had realized the medical deception was connected to something much larger.

He Needed Me to Sign

During our divorce, Grant constantly told me our company was in financial trouble.

He showed me spreadsheets filled with debt.

He said several major clients were leaving.

He warned that if I fought him over ownership, we could both lose everything.

At the time, I was exhausted.

I was grieving my marriage.

I was still blaming myself for the family we had failed to build.

Grant used all of it.

“Take the settlement,” he told me one night. “Walk away before this becomes uglier than it needs to be.”

Jocelyn was there too.

She brought me tea.

She put her arm around my shoulders.

“Maybe a clean beginning is what you need,” she said softly.

So I signed.

What I didn’t know was that Grant had concealed several profitable contracts.

The company wasn’t collapsing.

It was preparing for its strongest year yet.

And because Jocelyn managed financial operations for my charitable foundation, she had access to donor accounts, contracts, passwords, and internal approvals.

Over time, money had been redirected through a private consulting company connected to both of them.

They hadn’t simply replaced me in each other’s lives.

They had used my lowest point to remove me from the life I had built.

Back in the hospital hallway, Grant stepped closer.

“This is ridiculous. You can’t prove any of that.”

Dr. Sloan glanced at me.

I opened my handbag.

“Actually, Grant, that’s why I’m here.”

The Evidence He Thought Was Gone

I removed my phone.

Grant looked almost amused again.

“What are you going to do, show me screenshots?”

“No.”

I unlocked the screen.

“The former clinic administrator gave a sworn statement seven weeks ago.”

Grant’s face changed.

Jocelyn whispered his name.

He ignored her.

I continued.

“He kept the original files, emails requesting changes, payment records, and messages showing exactly who asked him to do it.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

At the far end of the corridor, two hospital security officers appeared.

They remained near the desk.

Grant noticed them.

For the first time, he looked nervous.

“What have you been doing for the last year?”

I held his gaze.

“Learning the difference between what you told me and what actually happened.”

Jocelyn suddenly spoke.

“Grant told me those old records didn’t exist anymore.”

Silence.

Grant turned toward her so quickly that even she looked startled.

“Jocelyn, stop talking.”

And there it was.

One sentence.

One crack in the perfect life they had spent a year displaying.

I almost smiled.

Not because I enjoyed seeing them frightened.

Because for years I had been told that I was confused.

Now they were proving my case themselves.

The Truth About Their Son

Dr. Sloan opened the envelope.

“There is one additional result that should be discussed.”

Jocelyn’s expression changed instantly.

Grant looked at her.

Then at the boy in her arms.

“What result?”

Dr. Sloan spoke carefully.

“Because the original records raised questions relevant to the pending legal review, additional testing was authorized.”

Grant frowned.

“Testing for what?”

Dr. Sloan paused.

“Parentage.”

Jocelyn began shaking her head.

Grant stared at her.

“What is he talking about?”

She said nothing.

Dr. Sloan continued.

“The confirmed result shows that you are not this child’s biological father.”

Grant stood completely still.

For a moment, his face revealed nothing at all.
